Title: Coincidence Of Coincidences
Post by: dtcerrato on January 27, 2018, 09:46:45 AM
As we write this and as early as August of 2016 - when we purchased our Alaska parcel in Tok, a coincidence really excited the wife & I that we'd like to share. We didn't know it right away but as time went buy after reviewing the Google map image of our land multiple times we noticed that the Google photo included our bus & toad parked on the road shoulder a block away on the opposite side of the road. That is exactly where it sat for no more than 1/2 day while we walked the land in phone conversation with the realtor. What are the chances of a satellite snapping a photo of a quadrant of property being purchased on the opposite corner of a continent while being there physically?! The corner property (top half of photo) surrounds a small clearing in the wooded area just above the detached garage (white roof), in the clearing a small hole in the earth can be seen where the house that burned down sat on a small cellar area. Across the street (& lower in the photo) is the white roofs of our bus & toad. What a feeling that came over us when we realized that we were in the photo! We want ever so much to return to do improvements to our "other place".

Can not click on picture. Will not download a file.  Can you reformat it?  Is it possible the orbiting satellite was programed to hit on your bus?  Dunno.  Probably there is some causality here?  Dunno that either.

Its a better picture than what Google did to me. What they update their pictures every 8-10 years depending on where you are. I had my house re-roofed over the course of a week. There was trucks and crap everywhere and tar paper and wood strips across my roof. The place looked like a hill Billy compound.  Guess when they updated my picture .... You were lucky and got an interesting coincidence. I got eight years of explaining...

Hopefully next time that satellite takes that photo there will be a structure over the hole in the ground.

It would be fun to know exactly when GOOGLE is going to take those pictures. That way you can be ready then go outside, wave and make funny faces.

hay Dan  don't be so fast as to build something as do you not have a perfectly good bus you can stay in and not have to worry about a structure that needs insurance and up keep + the fact that you will not be there for months at a time ?

we have a place in Florida that I have to do all that and I worry about the times that there is no one there . if I had my way it would be a lot only with power and well and septic but no house to worry about

it is a long way from home

just my 2 cents worth

Dan, if it we mine I'd build a pole barn big enough for the bus with a pit where the hole is. (even if it's just a behind the rear axle pit)
That way you can park the bus under cover while staying there and no need to worry about an expensive complete structure to be vandalized or destroyed by weather or fire while your not present.
Then you could let other busnuts "rent" space from you when you aren't around with just charging routine maintenance such as yard work and minor repairs possibly needed.
Just a thought.

Some great ideas, thanks for the comments...
If/when we get to build something on the property, it probably won't be an expensive kit if we could help it.
We have enough building materials on the FL property to build something quaint & comfortable there.
The bus is way comfortable for now but thinking of our later golden years to have something on that end so we have the option to drive there with or with out the bus or even the option to fly in w/o the bus nor the fuel expense.
We don't see leaving the bus there in the winter - but there is the possibility if we have enough building material to build the bus a small shelter then we may either leave it there for a winter or even keep it there with us through a winter! which is something we'd like to try. We've come to know & trust lots of residents of Tok so we don't worry about the property there, especially with our next door neighbors watching over the property with their two dogs. A 26' U-Haul with trailer caravanning with the bus & toad would be an expensive trip but so would buying a structure there. Lots of variables to consider - is why we like posting it to see some of the (some times crazy) ideas.

Dan,

Tok Tok Tok. Tok is cheap. lol. Finally got my interest to check it out. -30 at 10am? WTF. OK, so winter is out. Seems like May-Sept is the boundary for "temperate" weather. And it gets most precip in summer, assuming afternoon thunder showers?  When do you plan to stay there?

We have already stayed there May through Sept in 2016 - not in one stretch but intermittently between N & S AK which is why we like it there, centrally located and on the way in & out no matter what your route is & by the way it was 43 below @ 6:30 (cst) am this morning which would be 3:30 am AK St. Its 4 hrs S of Fairbanks, 6 hrs N of Anchorage, 1.5 W of Yukon CA, & 5.5 from Denali in the NW. It's arid compared to Anchorage. Unofficially one of the coldest spots in NA at a possible -67 degrees F but constant more like MN.

If every busnut thought about camping in Alaska in the winter during their design thinking...

There would be lots less of this "i'm frozen up, what do I do?" posting...

Happy coaching!

Probably the reason antifreeze concentration in our 04 is at 70 below zero!
