Title: 24v Headlight
Post by: richard5933 on November 19, 2017, 04:57:52 AM
Trying to find replacements for our sealed beam headlights. Not interested in upgrading to LED, just wanting to replace 40-year-old lamps with new.

Manual shows 4619 & 4624 as part numbers. Anyone know of a current  part number for these?

Since the bus is 24v I can't just walk into a local parts store to buy them.

Thanks.

I found the first one on eBay, didn't check the second number.

The PO of my bus put a 24v to 12v converter on the floor by the steering column and ran 12v headlights off of it....lots of times i would rest my foot on it while going down the road. :)

If you look in the compartment under driver, look at ceiling of compartment just right of steering column. There should be several wires with plugs that stick down about 6 inches and the plugs are connected to each other. If yours is that, GM made a resistor panel that bolts to floor (two small holes should be there). The pael is about 10 inches long and about 5 inches wide. Has several resistors mounted horzontally. This was an option to be able to use 12 volt headlights. Just plug and play. Check with Luke; maybe he can get you a take off.

You can also use this: https://www.amazon.com/Pyle-PSWNV720-Power-Converter-Technology/dp/B003P17X8I (https://www.amazon.com/Pyle-PSWNV720-Power-Converter-Technology/dp/B003P17X8I)

I just did some searching and 24 volt sealed beams are hard to find anymore. Not a problem just a couple of years ago. Again, check with Luke.
They make LED versions that will operate at 12 to 28 volt now. Expensive in 5 3/4 size. I think I'm going to upgrade to them due to difficulty in getting the regulars anymore. Also the brightness and beam pattern is going to be much better than the old type.
MCI got around this by wiring their headlamps in series using 12 volt in a 24 volt system. Only down side is, is that if one goes out, both will go out, not the best idea in some driving situations. I got a resistor panel from my parts bus, but someone cut the plugs off, so will take some time to repair, trace wires and install new plug/ sockets.

If you still need 24v lamps, Napa can order them for you.

I use Cibie quartz halogen lights with 24 volt bulbs, rather excellent to be honest.  Daniel Stern carries the 24 volt bulbs.  https://www.danielsternlighting.com/products/products.html (https://www.danielsternlighting.com/products/products.html)

I switched to Hella Europe type some years ago.  The kits came with 12v bulbs but I bought the 24v bulbs separately. They are big improvement over the originals.

Richard,

I think I have at least one 24 VDC headlight I bought from Luke a few years ago.  You are welcome to have it(them) for the postage.

PM me for address.  I probably wont be able to find it in the garage until Thanksgiving.

Steve

I ended up just ordering a new set from Luke. One day maybe I'll have the patience to do more research on other options, but for now this ended up being the easiest approach.
