OK, Photobucket isn't dead, but it's dead to me. Suddenly, I couldn't see photobucket photos on this forum, only a black box that said "No Photo Available -- To Enable 3rd Party Posting, see www.Photobucket/P500 (http://www.photobucket/P500)". As I understand it, they wanted me to buy a $399/year photobucket membership. No way on that one, folks.
I've deleted all my photos off Photobucket (they were just copies of photos in my laptop, anyway) and cancelled my Photobucket account. Now I need a place to post photos that I can link to on this forum. Anybody have a recommendation for a free site -- Flickr (sp??), etc.? What works for y'all??
Thanks, Bruce NC USA
It appears that you already have a Gmail account. You can put photos there in an album and make it public.
TOM
From past viewing of many photos they arent free, if one considers ads on the side or sides. I struggled with this for a very long time, and any selection has their positives and negatives.
I understand in some photo sites with "levels" of memberships they have different options. The cost you listed must be for a special set of conditions im sure not familar with, and am not using the site. So Im not a member there but have always found it to be filled with ads, maybe just to non members i respectfully dont really know. Im a plain and simple hard azz and if i dont want to fight ads to view a photo, Im not making my link show them so others have to. Sorry to be so blunt.
What happened to good old days! Well i guess everybody uses a host site nowadays even forums have bandwidth limits while they are subscribers of host sites. Its kinda easy to understand that way back when it was available to upload to the site for a photo or many their storage there was not many that could compare to now as smart phones and all the ability. Keep us posted of any nice options of interest.
Good day there
Floyd
I have Amazon Prime lol they offer free hosting to Prime members, I have no idea how they come up with FREE
I have linked to photos I post in my Facebook account. That's the only place I post photo's other than inside posts on this and a very few other forums. But basically if I can't add a photo inside a forum post, I don't bother. I also keep my photos extremely small in file size. I have no need to see a 4 or 5 meg blurry picture of a bus part, to be honest.
How about Dropbox, does that work?
I just wiped out my photobook account also. Got the same as Bruce after having it for 6 years. Don't need them for 399.00 a year.
I have used it for years as well and no $$$ from me to then as well

I've been using the Tapatalk app on Android to post photos. Automatically resizes them on upload.

I have used dropbox for a long time, but I can not figure out how to use it to host pictures on a forum. I tried, and it just seems the security settings prevent it. Maybe if I made the folder 'shared'. Idk.
I started using my own hosting that is attached to my domain I buy through godaddy. It turned out to be the easiest in the end.
yep. There are many ways to store files/pics on a hosted server. The advantage of the big tools like google drive and dropbox is they integrate into the client device. Like dropbox can expose itself in your PC by having to show as a typical folder and you can drop/drag stuff to it. With basic files on a server you need to FTP them around so more manual.
Actually, I'm looking for some public domain software that allows you to emulate dropbox or google drive features but with your own server on the back end in the cloud. I may be overly paranoid but I only give files to 3d parties unless I have to. They all scoop all that data and use it for marketing and who knows what else. Plus, since it is stored in massive data banks by the common companies, it is very very simple for the Feds to knock on them to give up all your stuff.

owncloud. they've got a sync client for phones and pc's, and you run your own server.
JM,
Thanks dude! So awesome. Doing this never got to the top of the to-do list but this was enough to get that single keyword to open up the subject. I assumed there were OS Dropbox systems but it is incredible how much functionality exists beyond the public ones.
owncloud has all I need, not looking for any advanced features. Primarily hosting my own storage and integrated sync and cross platform access is fine.
Doing a bit of research reveals the revolution at owncloud and the core developers started nextcloud. Initially viewing demos, I thought this looks very similar until I read more about the split.
Looking at github, the amount of energy and activity and contributors is amazing. Testament that Frank's ideology is viewed similarly by a large cut of the community. Looks like most features are same for now but like the momentum behind nextcloud.
I'm sure either would work fine for me but I'm going to install nextcloud in the next day or so. Really excited to get all my stuff back under my control.

I sure wish I knew what you all were talking about. All I want to do is share a few pics with other bus nuts without having to pay PB 300 bucks a year. My pics probably aren't worth enough to spring for them so Oh Well. Jack :-[
If you have an Android phone, then you can use the app called Tapatalk. Just search the app and access the BCM forum through Tapatalk. Once there, you can upload your posts with the photos using the camera or the gallery on the phone. It's pretty easy to move photos from your PC to your phone for upload from a gallery as well if you need to. Not sure, but probably something similar for those with an iPhone.
I've been using Tapatalk for a while to post photos, and it makes it pretty easy. The conversion to the proper size is automatic, and it only takes a time or two to figure out which way to hold the phone when taking the photos to get them to show up on the forum in the proper direction.
No need for links, embeds, or any other complications.
Richard. Thanks for the reply--I actually sort of get what you are saying. I checked my AT&T ZTE phone and it doesn't have tapatalk. I'll go by the vendors tomorrow and see if they can up load it for me. Thanks again, Jack

If you want to just run it, try out Freenas to run it on. It has a nextcloud plugin that does it all. FreeBSD base, installs to a usb drive or a pair of mirrored usb drives for boot, protects your data drives with ZFS (best FS ever) mirrored, raidZ1, Z2, three way mirror, whatever you want, and pretty much will never ever lose your data unless you delete it. I've had data in ZFS for years and years, lost drives, replaced drives, used crappy drives, and it deals with it all.

Jack thats on your phone, Above when you find the Play store App, open it and at the top its like a search bar. Type in TAPAtalk and click on GO or what ever to move to the App. Open the app and click Click Install and it will download to your phone. Then just wait while it does that a mixed drink is good at that point ( A Manhattan is acceptable) Then when it is done just click open and your ready to put in your Tapatalk ID and Password click remember me. That way anytime you want to go into it you won't have to enter it every time. HTH

jm,
Thanks for mentioning the NAS option. I have pretty much given up doing any local hosting, rather putting all my server based production work on cloud services, currently Digital Ocean or remote to client servers. Everything else I do is local Mac VM setups, VMware,, VirtualBox, MAMP, etc.
There is plenty of hardware laying around here to provision a local server, just need to consider going back to having hardware in the house to keep an eye on. You get spoiled with the cloud.
The main advantage of local hosting is cost is practically free for nearly unlimited storage with such low disc costs. The main disadvantage is access on the public side will be slow as my uplink is only 6 mbs, reliability, and availability. Also, if I need remote admin and server is hosed, well, I'm pretty much SOL until a visit home if a remote reboot fails.
I'm doing it so no need kicking tires, just want to get it working with a simple configuration and start serving up files. Command line Linux install looks very straightforward.
OK. Got nextcloud installed on a Digital Ocean Droplet server. Just starting to play around with it but I like it and decided not to local host it. The small server is only 5 bucks; I can add 100Gb for 10 more. If I start filling NC up, I may migrate to local for added storage at less cost. Here's a test shared link. Need to test device sync next. Thanks again.
Maybe we can get the BCM forum upgraded for improved image handling.

LOL and I thought I was the only cheap @$# with the $29.00 ZTE smart phone, the problem Jack our cheap phones don't have enough memory ;D but I am not paying 100's of dollars for a phone that I break or lose BTDT
Now all hopes of ever posting pictures are dashed with your revelation that my $29.95 my ZTE phone doesn't have enough memory for Tapatalk. I hunted in the apps store on my phone but couldn't find Tapatalk in the offerings. Now I know why. And no, we're not cheap--just thrifty---
I was told you could buy a memory card and double the memory for 15 bucks I may try that
Now you are just toying with me--getting my hopes up again etc.

Not sure what you mean by app store. I suspect that you were looking in the app store provided by your carrier or by the phone manufacturer.
To get Tapatalk you need to go to the Google Play Store app. Even your phone should have ample memory to run that app. If not, then you might have way too many photos or videos on the phone.

That's too bad. I'm all for being thrifty, but maybe this is one of those times when it's possible to be too thrifty. To be honest, I've seen some low-cost smartphones but never one that limited contacts and apps to this degree. Seems like it's not really a smartphone, just a regular phone with a touch screen.
In this case, then I'm out of ideas for easily posting photos.

Actually, the forum is really easy to read and manipulate on a smartphone. Tapatalk optimizes for the small screen, and there is no loss of readability. The photos are also clear and easy to save. It's also possible to upload photos that have been previously stored on the cloud (such as Google Drive or OneDrive) through the app. All this without the need for any additional photo storage sites or manipulating any links. That's the why of the small screen.
For uploading, a computer is certainly ok. However, before uploading from a PC you have to first save to the PC from the camera and then make sure the file size is small enough to be accepted if they are not hosted online somewhere. On the app, the photos can be sent directly from the camera or gallery to the app and are automatically converted so that the size is acceptable.
I have nothing at all to do with the app and get nothing from recommending it. It's just that I have found it to be extremely handy. In the end, whatever works best for someone to accomplish their goals is what they should do.

I have a bit of standing here as a web developer for my real job. If we value the photos we post and want them to stay with the post in perpetuity we should use the native photo hosting tools the forum provides. I see all the time great forum posts with hotlinked photos that are dead, gone forever.
It's certainly not as easy, but I don't think anyone is here because our hobby is easy.

You are so correct and totally agree. Maybe we should just ask Gary why there is not better image support for the forum and has the image upload settings cranked down so hard. Everyday storage becomes less of a cost issue and since SMF product features take care of processing the images it's not clear what might be the concern.
Updated - quick search finds built in feature to resize uploaded images. May eliminate the issue about resizing limits but not the uploading images from not so smart phones.

Gary????
If you just make a copy of your picture you want to put in and rename it. Then mouse over it to see how many mb it is and resize on your computer in your own picture file which if you have Win 10 should be there in your picture program to 40 per picture you can get two in your post or one in at 100. ;D
Computer code was not my talent.
I can Easily say phones you put in your pocket are "code built" using a:
1 Newer format and somewhat smaller, i guess like all the dam car stuff!
2 They call them smart because they were taught from older experience.
3 Seems all forums i frequent are the same in photo hosting and they do or have been or are continually being updated to better use the Newer phone and whatever else smaller format.
My first pc had a 12 meg hard drive. I took 18 pictures today with my smarter than i phone and it automaticly made a video, ugh! with music. I thought about sending it to my brother and found out it was 67 megs? Whaaat
Someone please esplane native hosting

Richard is right. Therefore I upgraded my phone to a LG K20 which supports Tapatalk. I've taken several pics and been able to upload them to my computer (Windows 10) but haven't a clue how to upload them to a post (like this one) from the phone. Is it done through my Gmail? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jack
With Tapatalk, you need to be logged in as a user of this forum. One you've got the forum opened, there are three dots on the upper-right hand corner of the screen that are stacked one on top of the other. If you tap on these dots you get to the menu. Top item in the menu gives you the place to log on.
Once you do that, then you can add new topics or reply to current ones directly from the app. You can also add your photos through the app - no need to use any other app to do this.
On my phone, there is an orange circle with an arrow. Tap on that and I get the screen to add a reply.
I type the message into the upper section.
Just below the section for entering your message, there is a section where you can add a photo from your camera or your gallery. I've circled it on the attached photo. Tap the gray box with the plus symbol and it should give you a screen where you can choose what type of image you want to add.
