Title: Flojet Water Pump
Post by: DKO on September 26, 2017, 09:51:39 PM
One of the very first things I had trouble with on our coach back in March 2008 was the fresh water pump system. Mine came original with two 12V pumps but by the time I purchased it, the original configuration was long gone. It had obviously be re-plumbed to accommodate different pumps. It had a conglomeration of Shurflo and Flojet pumps with water pipe and strainers every where.

The first pump took a bow quickly and I replaced it with a hi flow but standard type Flojet. That is all I had ever had in sticks and staples RVs and it goes full blast only and cycles like a beast.

The second pump went out the first winter and I replaced it with a variable speed Flojet 4525-743 VSD 4.5 GPM

I noticed it leaking Saturday. It seems to be leaking where the lower housing assembly is mounted to the pump and leaks bad enough that it will not shut off.

I have not called to see if I can get parts but it looks like it can be rebuilt. I am considering buying a replacement for the leaking pump, rebuilding it if possible and saving it for a spare to the first constant speed pump I replaced. The Flojet 4525-743 VSD 4.5 GPM pump is not available but they have a replacement, Flojet R4426143A VFLO 5.0 GPM.

Suggestions or ideas?

Davy

Most reliable water pump is the old fashion on/off with mechanical switch (this also according to the factory rep from Shurflo). I have 2 in parallel on my bus-low pressure, but works fine.

On Tom's advice I also have two SHURflo 2088 pumps.   They are on a slide-out tray for easy access, and each is mounted to a quick-disconnect plate so it takes less than a minute with no tools to remove a pump for PM if needed.   The RV owners in the yard where I keep my bus are always complaining about their water pumps failing (or worse), and they all have the fancy new variable-speed ones.

I had two of the standard water pumps in parallel and they sucked.  I had a huge accumulator tank just to try to limit the pumps coming on and off so much.  I switched to a Sensor VSD 4.5 with much better luck.  I had a spare and had to use it this year after the original started to leak just before my trip.

Belfert,

Were you able to replace the original with the same or did you have to upgrade? Did you try rebuilding the VSD 4.5?

I bought two of the Sensor VSD 4.5 pumps when I bought mine so I would have a spare.  The pumps have quick disconnects on the plumbing so it was easy to switch them out.

I have not had time to disassemble the pump.  I replaced the pump on the 18th and we left town on the morning of the 19th.

This probably doesn't help? But I've been using house shallow well jet pumps in my coaches and they provide house water pressure and haven't failed me yet (except I froze one on accident). They are incredibly reliable.

Interesting, Scott. I am limited on size somewhat. What model number do you use? How is it for noise and vibration?

Davy,

If you don't have this resolved, when you are at Jeff's next time get in touch with me and I will show you my set up. So far it has the reliability of an anvil.

Even at $600 bucks a little wow! Wouldn't take long to suck fresh water tank dry if wife or kids like long showers.

Hi Guys,

After going through numerous Flojest, and Sureflo's, this pump has now outlasted them all in my coach. (5 years now)

Always use a strainer before your pumps!

Regards
Nick-
