Coach has been running perfect for hours, stopped at Loves to get fuel and shut her down. Now she won't start. She's getting fuel, it's acting like a sensor fault of some sort. I don't have a code reader. Anyone near central North Carolina that can help? Fuel is coming out of primary filter line when I take it off and it's definitely diesel. No smoke while turning over. Acting just like a bad sensor. I need a code reader since I'm stuck at a fuel island. Who is the nearest place I can have it towed to?

Check the circuit breakers or fuses that provide power to the DDEC ECM. Make sure wire 240 and 241 have 12 volts at the power plug at the ECM. You should have a momentary diagnostic request switch that will let the red and amber lights read out the codes for you. If the supply voltage is under 10.5 volts chances you won't start as well.
Bill and I typed at the same time☺️
You can also jumper the A and M terminals on the Data Link Connector and flash the codes with the Check Engine Light. Seems like the most common problems with these things are the ECM fuses located in the battery compartment and low coolant level.
Bob
Thanks guys. I do have power to the ECM. I've been there done that last year when my ignition relay died. My dash lights were destroyed by previous owner and don't work. I do have the connector down on the floor by the drivers seat that I can use to get readings. Can I put a test light of sorts in one of the pins to read codes? What the fastest way for me to get a code reader for this? I am almost certain a sensor is faulting like maybe the low coolant sensor or something

The check and stop engine lights are controlled by the ECM and are not connected to the data link connector.
The readers pop up on eBay periodically, but that doesn't help you tonight:

If you think it's the coolant level sensor, you can bypass it by jumping across the connector and see if that makes a difference.
Bob
Bob tell me more about bypassing the coolant sensor. And guys seriously is that link to the Nexiq scanner the one I need? I'm ready to buy one right now and overnight it. Should have done this long ago. If anyone has one they are willing to sell, let me know. If that's the one I need in the link bob posted then I'm all over it

Check your transmission fuses. We lost a fuse and bus wouldn't start.
Do you have lights on your shift pad, when you turn your master switch on?
I would use what the designers made! The printed document shows and clearly says jumping the specific terminals. Does in fact trigger the ECM to flash any fault codes as listed in the diagnostic sheet.
I would love to have a new diagnostic box but in the mean time. We should help with whats designed and available.

Scott
That is the reader you need but check the DDEC version you have. DDEC I is two computers and DDEC II is one computer. $545 is a decent price. If you have DDEC I you can clear codes by disconnecting all power to the ECM but if DDEC II or higher you must have this reader.
I'm pretty sure Scott is a 2 or 3!
Scott on a Setra S215 I used to work on for a customer we had low coolant sensor failure once and Setra tech support had us unplug the sensor and bypass it at the plug with a paper clip to get it home where a new sensor was overnighted to us. HTH!
Man I can believe the # of busnuts broke down right now, you in SC, Ned in KY, Dan in GA, the Coffee bus in TN and who knows who else!
:( BK :o
So I just pulled all the ECM fuses and sprayed electronic cleaner in them and put them back. Pulled connectors to various sensors in engine compartment coolant level sensor etc and sprayed electronic cleaner and put them back. Coach magically starts now. Weird.

Can someone tell me (BK maybe) which sockets you jumper to bypass the coolant sensor? I'd like to know this for future reference. I am still ordering a code reader. This is ridiculous how many times I would have given my first born for one.

Do the simple things first check you power supply and grounds ,if the check engine on the dash does light up the thing will not start. The TRS are behind the cam pulley check the connection on those. If you want a Pro/Link keep your eyes on Ebay Andy paid 100 bucks for his with the DDEC carthage they are nice to have but they don't solve all your problems
Scott on the Setra we did that on the coolant sensor was located just above the radiator and we unplugged it right at the sensor and looped a paper clip right there at the plug. (two wire plug)
;D BK ;D
Scott, the coolant level sensor will be in your radiator surge tank up over your head when you're looking at your engine. It will have a 2 pin connector that you can jump across with a paper clip, as BK suggests.
That ebay reader is the one you need and I agree it's reasonably priced. If you have a DDEC engine you really should have a reader. I'd fix the CEL and SEL too, at your earliest convenience

Looks like I was late to the party
OK somehow I missed the post that your up and running! Great deal now to get the other two on their way to Evansville back going!
;D BK ;D
Me too Clifford!

Clifford, You and BK are always welcome....late or not😊

The cheapest way to buy a Pro-Link for DDEC is to buy one for old GM cars, and buy the DDEC cartridge separately. GM cars used the same diagnostic connector as our buses have, so you won't need to buy the $50 adapter, and because nobody these days wants Pro-Links for old GM cars you can get the whole shebang for not much.
To replace the Pro-Link that was stolen when my bus was broken into last year, I bought another earlier this year. A Pro-Link 9000 in a case with a printer and all cables for only $99, and a brand-new DDEC 2/3 cartridge with manual for $125. If the seller says Make Offer, give him a crazy low offer and see if he bites. Bargains are out there. Also buy the DDEC Troubleshooting Manual, well worth it. It's like an umbrella - if you have it you won't need it, but if you don't have one . . .
John
Good advice John no way would I pay 500 bucks for a absolute Pro/Link nowadays ;D lol I read the codes from a DDEC l with a $39.00 OBD reader and just translate the code using the manual
So just spoke with Ken Arnold and he's suggesting a Nexiq USB Link reader. I think I'm gonna spring for it

Lol it won't be long you will be able to buy just a app for the smart phones for diagnostics ,DD and Cummins can diagnose from a 1000's of miles away now using bluetooth
I like my nice, simple DT466. No error codes, no funky electronic crap.

Hey Scott when you get that bad boy (Nexiq USB Link) up and running, you'll have to post your trial and errors. Hope not many errors.
Scott, be careful when you get the Nexiq, there are Chinese units that look just like the good one's that you don't want to get.
If you get a Silverleaf unit it will also give you the codes.

Hi, Jack. Is Silverleaf compatible with "early 00s" Cummins ISC/8.3 engine technology or is it for Detroit products only? Thanks, BH
I would think it worked on all electronic engines.
Jack
Scott I tried to call you, but your box is full. Give me a call at 863-206-3838 I have an extra silver leaf that I could send you to try.

Thanks, good to know. BH
Sliverleaf works on all electronic engines Martin will sell you what is needed,he makes a glass dash too they have dropped way down in price to around 4k since he started making those for NASCAR and Indy.Unless they have changed you can only read the codes and not delete the codes.in other words read only no programing capabilities like a Pro/Link

Thank you. This is useful information, it will help me when I have my "electronic" powertrain on the road.
OT but did you get married yet ;)
Thanks Jack. Sorry my phone has been blowing up lately. I need to delete some voicemails for sure. Just wrapping up my weekend music in Orlando. I want the Nexiq because indeed I want to clear codes too and make programming changes that the silver leaf doesn't allow. I am avoiding the Chinese Nexiq units for sure. Already on that.

You can clear codes with the silver leaf, but you can't change program in the ECM
Jack
Good info Jack. Are you consider selling your spare SL?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
There is only 2 codes that will keep a Detroit from running,if you just want codes repair you dash lights CEL and SEL
Cliff, low coolant, low oil pressure right?
