Title: 458 xantrex
Post by: bigred on September 07, 2017, 06:31:07 AM
I have a 458 Zantrex that is acting a little squirreley  How do I go about checking this to determine if it is the inverter or a bad battery??

If the battery(ies) have cells that water can be added, buy a battery hydrometer and check specific gravity of cells. They should be fairly even with other. If not, indicates bad cell,s. If they are sealed, you can take them to a location that can load test them.

What do you mean by squirrely? Sometimes if something gets wonky in the control board it needs to be reset. Disconnect all incoming power (both ac and dc) for 10 minutes and then reconnect. That usually does the trick. Sometimes with the 458 if the batteries are allowed to go completely dead, when they are brought back on line the voltage can ramp up slow enough that it causes problems in the electronics control board. A hard reset as i described above usually fixes it.

Derrick: I have done the hard reset and it seems to start the charge cycle fine ,but then the little 30A mini breaker mounted on the inverter will trip .This breaker has hardly any resistance when I reset it .Could it be that the breaker is bad? This thing did drain the batts so low that the alarm sounded ,but seems like the hard reset took care of it as far as getting it to charge but after it runs a bit ,the mini breaker trips.

Sounds like your charge rate is too high. Try turning it down to 5 amps. Hope this helps. Raymond

Get a voltage reading on the batteries in rested state. If the batteries are extremely low then the charging circuit could be overloading. Do you have the remote panel that shows charging amps? Im guessing it goes up over 100 then trips the breaker? Try turning down the charge rate like Raymond says. If you still have trouble you may have one or more bad batteries.
