Mines titled as a bus right now. I'll change that eventually

My Kenworth 3 axle is registered as MH
Mine is register as a camper and has Connecticut camper plates.
Check your local regs to be sure. In North Carolina, you have to ask for a "Housecar" title and plate, the code on mine is HC. That's 100% non-commercial (meaning you can't use it for commercial purposes but you're shielded for commercial requirements, you can drive it without Comm license, etc.). Sorry, no idea what the formal nomenclature is in TX.
Just a heads up how it works in some places ;)
Well it depends what it is registered as now really. Typically the vin will automaticly come up on their screen as ( last register type etc. ). Its really a process if it is not already converted to RV. One might think a name change is the issue but for the DoT its a coach bus (commercial ) until a new vin is issued or they transfer it..
Its about safety and that stuff with the Brown shirt DOT Patrol inspectors. On the other hand with the state license revenue office its about Tax and the particular new items in the build ( worth ) and best have reciepts. This adds to a total worth for the yearly estimation. Or however in your State. Where im at this pile of papers is scrutinized and you can bet by a senior in the office. Here its a trip to the Capital offices not your typical local. Here these ladies are like military Drill Instructors without the need to scream, rather a simple uhm "Nope"
They have heard every thing. All that fun is only after the particulars of the build requirements in your state are met and the appointment and inspection by the DOT is made and passed.
Welcome and Enjoy the fun

When I did my first bus which was a skoolie (our current one was already a coach when we purchased it) I had to take it to the local DMV office and an inspector came out and made sure that it had everything required to be self contained. IE a bathroom with holding tanks, a kitchen with stove, and a bed to sleep in. That was in Oregon and to my knowledge hasn't changed. The person I bought it from was using it for hauling a race car and it was still licensed as a commercial bus when I purchased it.

Just to be sure I understand -- you're saying that although it was "commercial" when you bought it, they titled it for you as "non-commercial" once it passed the inspection?? Thanks, BH
Bruce to add what Will was saying ours sounds the same, i thought it good to add this: Missouri requirements mention these required items are to be "secured" this meaning in a permanent mounting style. Also important "either" heating or cooling and this to be seperate system from the vehicles particular system. The revenue offices here very much like photos, but again reciepts more and hope the reciept for the salvage yard microwave in the photo is in the pile ::)
Good day to you all

In Washington, you simply go to a private title /tab agency and tell them you want to switch it to a motorhome. I still have my 4 digit vin number and got not a single question or eyebrow raise. From commercial bus to a motor home in less than 5 minutes. Wish every other state requirement was as easy.
What is it registered as now? If it is a motorhome, they will probably just transfer it as that. If it is something else, tell them it is now a motorhome and ask how to change the registration over. I'm sure it's been done there before, and they will have a specific procedure. I doubt it will be too bad. After all, they don't want to be bamboozled but are not out to obstruct a legitimate transformation.

Correct. The man I bought it from was a race car driver and owned his own business. He used the bus commercially and wrote off all expenses associated with it. I converted it and took it to a local Department of Motor Vehicles office and told them I wanted to register it as a Motor Home. They inspected to ensure I had really converted it and that was that. In Nevada, to be a motorhome, MH designation, they want to see a bed, kitchen of some sort, I already had a refrigerator in, and a toilet, inspector didn't care what shape of completion it was in, but was concerned about a clearance light out. lvmci...
When I did one in SC, all they needed was pictures of the bathroom, kitchen, & bedroom & 2 outside pics so they could see all 4 sides.
I had more trouble convincing them it had no odometer & that the VIN was only 9 digits long.

Yes, the NC authorities really choked at 5 digits!
Ours is registered in Texas as a motor home.
We tried to register ours as "motorhome" in Alberta, but their computers demanded a second valid VIN for the house part. You can get one assigned for the price of a full inspection by a licensed RV technician, which created a chicken and egg problem. (Leaving it as a "bus" would have required commercial registration. Yikes)!
After a call to Edmonton for clarification, they issued a private registration in the "utility" class, same as an SUV. Conversion has been the never-ending project, so ever since, we have been driving a very large SUV.

I own a P8M4905A Buffalo and i live in Texas.

Unless you are using it for commercial purposes, you would not register it as a commercial bus. If it is unconverted, it would be a non commercial vehicle or a private use vehicle. Once converted, if not done so already, you would have to meet the state requirements and have it re-inspected before registering it as an rv or motorhome.
I can't confirm, but I have been told that registering it as a commercial bus means that you need to meet all of the DOT requirements and inspections.
