Title: Tires
Post by: Billysurf on August 28, 2017, 05:52:28 AM
Hi friends!  Yesterday we had two rear (passenger side) tires blow out on the interstate (everyone is fine).  Being a Sunday afternoon, we were only able to locate one tire that could fit, a Goodyear Edurance WHA 315/80R22.5 Load Range L, so we had that one and the spare put on.  Now that we're drivable again, we'd like to move the new tire into the spare compartment (the spare was 11 years old) and replace all four back tires.  We'd like affordable, but good quality.  We're traveling every weekend for the next year, and then only every few months after that.  Our coach has no tag axle, and we just replaced our two front tires last month with two Firestones- FS400 315/80R22.5.  Currently in Springfield, Massachusetts.  We are looking for recommendations.

Hi Billy, glad you and bus are ok. Are you towing a trailer or toad? lvmci...

Do you really need 315/80 tires? They are rated for a lot of weight. Maybe more than you need. 11R22.5 might be enough? And cheaper. Although you would need a narrower rim I think.

Thank you!  yes - that's the most important thing!  We are flat towing a jeep.

Good question!  Although after yesterday's double blowout, I am leaning toward overkill!!!  :)

   Hi;
        Might consider used tires for the drive wheels.   Check with commercial
        tire shops and truck stops.   Just be sure to check the date codes.

Don't pay for massive tread. I have tires on my SUV that are good for 100K miles. They're now 7 years old and have barely 50K miles use on them. They'll be cracking before they're worn out. Bus tyres are good for 500,000 miles yet we do a few thousand a year.

Hi Billy, with no tag axle, the weight and towing, with everything from rough roads to blowouts, I would think the maximum ply/weight rating would be called for. I seem to remember the single rear axle ln the MCIA2s have no towing or low weight towing recommendations,  lvmci...

Weigh your bus. 11R-22.5 will support 23,360lbs for the 14ply G rating, 24,020lbs for the 16ply H rating. They are a bit lower in height with the 315/80R-22.5 at 491rpm and the 11R-22.5 at 501rpm. Or at 60mph if your say turning 1800 now, the 11R-22.5 will turn 1837rpm.
11R-22.5 are a whole bunch cheaper, easier to find than the 315/80R-22.5. More than enough tire.
Your double blow out was most likely from low tire pressure. I bet now you'll be getting a wireless tire pressure monitoring system (like PressurePro). Good Luck, TomC

ditto that recommendation on TPMS. Getting one was 2 on the list, moved over solar panels even with the genny going on strike on occasion

You could consider Michelin or Bandag recapped tires for rear.

Not sure if OHTSU tires are an option in your neck of the woods, but they're a Japanese tire that  comes in a 12Rx22.5 for a good price and I like them. I replaced my Michelins with them and drivewise I can't tell the difference. Good luck with whatever you come up with, just be sure to check the date codes. Glad you're okay,
Will

Earlier this year, I bought 2 X 12R22.5 Sumitomo ST727 in Pasadena for one of my Crowns for $340 ea, out the door. Date codes were <6 mos old. I'm picking up 2 more for my Gillig next week, this time for $345 ea. I would probably try some of the better known Chinese, but for this price the Sumitomos give me a little more peace of mind. Of course I need to take them to my local tire guy for mounting, but I'll remove and reinstall the wheels myself, to further save money.
