Title: Special coolant for DD 2 strokes?
Post by: windtrader on August 11, 2017, 06:48:28 PM
I've been of the impression standard glycol and water mixed 50/50 was fine for the cooling systems. Most often get a tidbit here and there from FB but one post put me on alter. Basically, states additives are recommended in the coolant.

DD 2 strokes use HD Fully Formulated coolant. It is not the same as the old "regular" green that you may have used in cars and light trucks.
You need to have certain additives in the initial fill and then maintain them. This can be done with Coolant test strips and SCA. SCA can be added as a liquid or in a spin on coolant filter. To much inhibitors in the coolant is just as bad as to little.

Check DD list 93K217 it spells out the approved antifreeze's manufactures for DD  ??? you will not find WalMart Dollar stores, or Autozone on the list either.
I have a 8v92 in the shop now with a bad oil cooler he been using WM antifreeze for 5 years,a nasty mess looks like green mud and the back plate is so pitted there is no saving it or the cooler.
I will never understand people that don't read the jug the WM crap says on the jug "for light duty diesels and pickups" his reply was I never noticed that

Hello Kevin long time no posts  ;D

So, are most busnuts running these special coolant mixes? It seems mine had regular yellow stuff in the bays, same stuff I've topped off with. I'm assuming regular coolant can hold until the next regular PM flush, right? Then, where do you guys get the best prices on the right stuff?

Sometimes your local DD dealer will have the best buy I bought 8 cases from WW Williams in the spring for $11.99 a gal for the PowerCool

It won't take long before the wrong coolant ruins an engine or radiator. Despite an endless amount of information on the internet there are still people who think the color of the coolant is the key to what is required.

http://www.truckinginfo.com/channel/aftermarket/article/story/2013/05/how-much-do-you-know-about-heavy-duty-coolants.aspx (http://www.truckinginfo.com/channel/aftermarket/article/story/2013/05/how-much-do-you-know-about-heavy-duty-coolants.aspx)

Coolant color used to have a meaning but now every color in the rainbow is used and mostly as the coolant manufacturer's identity. The Walmart stuff may be cheap, but not when you consider the impact the wrong coolant has on cylinder liners or plugging radiators.

So what do I go buy?  Does it say something on the bottle that I look for?  I am about to do a pretty complete fill on my cooling system, except for what remains in the heater circuit (dash heater and the main OTR heater cores).  Can I add the new correct stuff and have it mix with a little of the green stuff?

I read the specs on that and it says it's specially formulated for wet sleeve engines, and I am aware of the need for special coolants and additives for wet sleeve engines.  My 8V-71 is dry sleeve, I seem to recall, and I also seem to recall a discussion on this where the outcome was dry sleeve engines don't need special coolant.  Not sure about the oil cooler issue, though, that doesn't make me happy.

My 8V92 engine required a coolant that met a specific Detroit Diesel spec. All I had to do was make sure the coolant container listed the spec and I was good to go. Unless it listed the exact spec number I chose to not take a chance. I never had trouble finding any with the spec listed.

Now I have been using the Detroit Diesel coolants so I don't have to be concerned.

Brian, a good heavy duty green antifreeze works it has for years but like Kevin said get the chemical balance right or it works on the after cooler, oil cooler, water pump and head seals.
For the 71 series I use the green Alliance brand for people that want the green it's Freightliners house brand.
Some of the antifreeze today require you us distilled water I use R/O water myself in the 2 strokes just shy away from cheap antifreeze,DD will let you use certain brands of the recycled  antifreeze though if it meets their specs

What about coolant filters?  Do I use a plain filter, or one with the additives inside?

Just when I thought I had things figured out, this has to come up!  I saved my antifreeze when I pulled my engine and I was just going to put it back in.

Brian for initial fill I would use a standard filter with no additives. Whatever coolant you choose to put in it should have the right ballance to start with. Too much additives can be just as harmful as the wrong coolant. It is my understanding that the filters with additives in them are to be used when testing the additive levels in the coolant reveals that it needs a boost, usually after some time and miles have been put on the existing coolant. The filters with additives can be bought with different concentrations and time release based on the test results of the existing coolant.

Brian they have test strips in a bottle at NAPA's. You test it by dipping the tank or taking a sample and dip it in that sample. You compare the chart and it will tell you what it needs or what it has that it doesn't need. Mine was right on when I got ready to change it just a little weak. I put in the NAPA heavy duty Global Final Charge or this kind below

If you have a friend or relative at NAPA you can get their heavy duty diesel anti freeze for around 13 dollars .This you mix 50/50 with distilled water ,colored red.If you don't have a friend or relative at NAPA you may pay as much 18.00 a gal as I did a few weeks back at the NAPA store in Kitty Hawk N C

When buying antifreeze check the seal on the 1 gallon bottles. I got mine home from Napa and found that 5 out of 8 were broken already and the top just unscrewed and the silver thing had been opened and 1/3 had been poured out already. I took it back and the manager looked at it and I don't think they believe me at first and then he went to the rack and checked some more and found 5 more. They replace them for me. Its a big commercial store and truckers are in there all the time and you see them outside doing stuff the their trucks so his guess was someone was filling their truck with antifreeze for free. :'(

That is the same kind of person that would go into the shoe section of a big store, try on boots and keep them on, then put their old boots in the box and put it back on the shelf. The NAPA situation might have been a store employee who had access to the antifreeze in the storeroom. It might be suspicious for someone to be returning jugs of antifreeze in that quantity.  :'(
