Title: Eng-hot light comes on after shutting the bus down then back on
Post by: Dlsnow on August 10, 2017, 12:13:38 PM
I am pulling a trailer for the first time with my mc7.
Its about 6500lbs and i have about 500 tongue weight.

The bus runs at 180 water temp all morning.  As the ambient Texas daytime temps rise so does my water temp.  When it starts climbing from 180 i pulloff for 15 to 20min and can usually make another 50 miles then call it a day.

Today i noticed that when i shutoff the eng-hot light is definately NOT on but if i power the bus right back up Eng-hot is on and flashing (i think it was flasbing).

All that heat in the steel block begins to heat the water up in the jacket when you shut the engine down causing your temp gauge to rise and kick off your engine hot warning light. When you start it, it should go off in a couple of minutes when the water begins cycling through the radiator again and cools back down. I've not had this happen on my bus, but on several older vehicles that I've owned in the past.

If you are trying to stay at or below 180 in an mc7 you will never get very far. The stock cooling on an mc7 was inadequate when everything was brand new, let alone all the years and wear and tear on the old beast now. You can run 195 all day long and not hurt a thing.

The bus seems to run normal at 180 (the center mark).
When it gets up near the next line - presumably 210 i get black smoke even going downhill.

Again this is the first time trailering and it is freaking hot in fort worth texas.  I am about 7 miles from my destination and think i can get there.

Maybe the trailer is too much.

Fyi i am headed to tucson and have about 900 miles left.

Adide from checking the overheating list from another thread any yhoights?

What you are experiencing is normal,,when the engine is shut off all water stops rotating and the block heat transfers to the water making the temp on the guage rise. As soon as you restart and begin circulating water , it will pass thru the radiator and cool down to normal.. I agree 180 is at the low end of normal, 190 to 195 whould be normal with high ambient temps.  You also should not shut it off after stopping without first setting the parking brake, remove from gear, then bring up the idle RPMs to 1000 to 1100 and hold for a short while to cool it down. This will help prevent the temp climb that you saw,  when the engine RPMs are up, so is the fan speed, and you will see the temps reduce sooner than idling or shutting off.>>>Dan
