Title: 24 Volt Clearance Lights
Post by: Tikvah on July 09, 2017, 01:41:52 PM
When I built my conversion I bought a whole new set of clearance lights from Mohawk.  They turned out to be pure junk.

This isn't a slam against Mohawk, I'm sure they didn't sell junk on purpose... and if it wasn't' four years past I'd give them a call.

Every one of them has fallen apart inside and I've ended up running screws through the lenses all the way though the bus body just to keep the lenses on the bus.  I've replaced lots of lenses.  Plus, since they failed so quickly, the sockets have corroded.

So, I'd like to replace them.  Luke said he has exact replacement LED fixtures.  Has anybody bought them?  Are they any good?  I don't want to do this again.

Luke didn't give me a price yet, but I know nothing is cheap.

Any help?

Also, if you've found ideal replacements from someone else I'm open.   But I only want 24 Volt LED.

Dave

My experience of led lighting in general has been poor. They seem to last about long enough to get them out the door. I've had 8/10 led house light bulbs fail in under 3 months. The work bus had an led tail light give out. That bus is under 3 years old. I've had led lanterns and flashlights last no longer than the 3rd set of batteries. I'd stick with bulbs imho.

Floyd, I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but what do I do with that page?  There's no prices, or application to my bus.
I can't buy from them.

Sorry, if ya cannot buy from them all thats available is looking at the part number on yours and using the replacement factory led number listed.
example: 7r-7-98 your now red clearance lights.
Fwiw old style lenses wont work on the newest old style, there is a difference. I am still running my mohawks from 2014 but did notice a slight lens difference, because im cheap and was gonna save a few pieces. And this was when leds were gold if ya could find any.

In the projects page someone posted a new great find on led's but i cannot for the life of me get anything to come up newer than 2011. Its highly possible your computer talents can wiz bang it 😁 In shape
Good luck
Floyd

Dave, I got tired of the plastic junk LED lights and bought Military grade clearance lights from  www.boyceequipment.com (http://www.boyceequipment.com) they were not cheap @$34.00 ea but will be there forever.

Boyce has a good selection of 24 volt bulbs too not the cheap made in China bulbs for about 1/2 the price of Napa and other Chinese made bulbs

Dave,
I bought all new, conventional clearance lights and housings from Luke about three years ago. They have been perfect. Yellow ones and red. Conventional incandescent bulbs. Stopped all my roof leaks too. YMMV.

I recently replaced all the running/marker lights on my MCI 96A3 with these Grote LED lights.

The topic for that is here:

They are rated for 12 or 24 volts.
They were pretty much a screw in change replacing the entire socket.
A little pricey at $20 but worth it if they work for as long as I hope they do.
All still working and no leaks (yet).

LED's on a vintage anything are:
A.Over rated.
B.look like hell.
C.Should be illegal
D. for you to add whatever.
imo the question is why ?
i don't get it, the incandescent does the job, why change it ? there are atleast 100 other things to spend Benjamin's on :(

I bought military surplus 24V bulbs in lots of 10 in the 3 sizes that are used on the bus for 5.99 a lot w/free shipping from a place in Tulsa, Ok. They're not quite as bright as the NAPA bulbs that I paid more than 5 bucks a piece for, but they work great and I have a good supply now. It seems like every time I move the bus, I have to replace one or more anyway. My 2 cents worth,  ;D

I am with Eagle on this one. I went to O Reilly's bought the socket rebuild for .65 and just clipped the wires and put on the new socket done. You also get the spring and cardboard disk if that is all you need.  ;D
