Is anyone running straight 140W GL5 gear oil? That is what my book calls for but have yet to find. I am hoping to find, other ideas? Thanks
You can buy 140GL at Auto Zone,I ran 85/140 synthetic in my Eagle for years never a problem a little pricey though it would hold over 4 gals
Thanks, I will take a look there. Hoping to pick up a 5 gallon pail, but no luck so far.
Tom try any Tractor supply or tractor company near you.
Most any Oil Distributor should stock it or can get it for you pretty easy. (if not they ain't much of a distributor!)
;D BK ;D
I have not found any 140w GL5, even tried auto zone today????

I have seen the 85/140, 75/140 oil. I was hoping for straight 140w per the manual. Maybe if MCI redid the manual they would spec 85/140.

i cannot imagine 140wt lubricating anything in sub zero temps...at least not for a few miles.
is 140 the only listed ?
The book calls for 140w at zero F and above 90w below zero.
I would be interested if anyone and their 90's model mci have a listing for the gear lube spec.
That may shed some light

I will check the Eagles manual when I get home I don't recall Eagle specifying 140W but I could be wrong, it is the same Rockwell dropbox on MCI and Eagle fwiw
The 90s models did not run a drop box. Thanks, I would like to know what Eagle spec was. I was told by a converter that Prevost did something to keep the noise down on the drop box. I would think just insulation, but have not seen a box from one. Anyone know same box?
Yes i agree no drop boxes, Many times the drop boxes have
more transmission related components.
So in all the cussin n discussin does the manual say GL5.
Or could it be gl4, it seems all the additives or technolectalons the
multi-weights are here to stay.
I think about that time in the 80s was the last of many fleet lube charts.
And it became an over fulltime job keeping it straight with the equipment.
Though in the coach fleet it was quite consistent and may have been easier.
Looks like were here nowadays seeing the super cracked oils. Keep an eye on it
Good day

The 90's model what ? Eagle's ran the drop boxes till the end,a drop box doesn't give problems if the maintenance is kept up, it's just a transfer case
Yes the manual says GL5. Did not know Eagle was still making a 35' in the 90s. My input shaft seal was leaking a little, so I checked it out and replaced the seal. But time for an oil change, manual says 25K.
Eagle used the drop boxes in the 40 and 45 footers too, most of the time when the input shaft seal starts to leak the bearing are starting to go bad I always pull the shaft and replace those bearing fwiw
I did not know they ran on 40 and 45'ers. All or just some? I had the flange back on it and saw your remarks about the bearings. It seemed tight but pulled it apart and the bearings look good so back in now. Have you ever replaced the race in the housing in the bus? Not sure about getting that one out in the bus?
I always pull the box Tom, it takes time to preload the 4 bearing with shims once you get it right they last for a long time. The 01 Eagle never used a drop box all the rest of the Eagle did with the exception of a few experimental models, if the Eagle has a boogie axle you will find a drop box.
I have a friend that uses the 4000 Allison with the drop box on the transmission so he could use a standard rear axle from a truck for the gearing he needed for his series 60 in a Eagle.
FWIW some models of the Flx's used the drop box to
Tom Y I checked my Eagles manual it says GL5 -85/140 w for the drop box and differential,no mileage chart it just says drain and refill twice a year (spring and fall)
Thanks for the information, looks like I will be running 85/140. MCI say 25k miles. May run syn, just not sure it is worth it. That makes sense about drop box and the boogie axle, just thought it was a 35 footer thing. Clifford do you pull the drop box only or whole pumpkin w/ box?
It's easier to pull the drop box alone ,if I find metal then I pull the pumpkin also
