Title: cooling blower on mci 8
Post by: artglass on May 24, 2017, 08:10:05 PM
looking to repower with a 8v 92 , been  reading the posts in past , figure out I have the large blower wheels , but my opening are the 7x 14  not the 14 x 14 like its suppose to have, talked with sam caylor he says I can just cut the hole out bigger with out changing the fan shroud or cage housing , any one ever done this with success, or should I find the correct ones , he doesn't have any right now? any input would be greatly appreciated, also I have the big rad  part no as 6k-5-1 is that the most up to date  version of the large radiator?

What vehicle do you have that you want to repower with an 8v92?

yes the mci 8 , anyone  ever  cut out the blowers like that or does anyone know if it makes a difference , the actual squirrel  fan cages measure 12 x 12

You can get the extra space by cutting an opening on the inside behind the jumpseat, where the rear of the rads stick out . Just make sure it's large enough, or you'll be adding to the outer doors as well.
I don't know about cutting the blowers.

Artglass, I can tell you that you'll likely want to open the box up so that you don't have any restriction on the exhaust air if you're going to run an 8v92TA. This engine is a challenge to keep cool (I have the same engine set to 500hp in my coach). I just measured my openings and they are indeed 14x14. I would try I make that happen on your coach if at all possible. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170528/f53e6d7130aacb1df85bd2efefb6bd4a.jpg)

Slight thread drift

Scott, the first thing Fred Hobe would tell you, the cones in your fans need replaced, in the pics, they look ragged?

For everyone, Fred did a lot of the early aggressive cooling mods to his MC8 to run a wicked 8V71T military engine. Pulley changes, metal cones in the fans,

He relayed a story back some time ago to a few of us one late night at Arcadia of some work with an aeronautical engineer and scoops like none of us have seen. The experiments ended, as there would be no return on the r&d investment... busnuts would just copy the work and not pay for it...  imagine running down the highway with your fan belt disconnected and the fan door propped open... and your engine staying cooler with the fans disconnected than with them spinning!?!?!?

The little scoops we do see are, at best useless, and at worst, actually swirl air AWAY from the radiator cavity...

He built and sold, or helped build, a lot of coaches back in the day.

Google his name, there are a bunch of things online for fan maintenance/upgrades.

happy coaching!

This is from a pretty darn late model, running a 6 cyl but im pretty sure the same as any with the 8V92
It has a opening measure about 11 deep and 14.5 wide in the actual opening. The mounted opening runs like 15 deep by 14.5 wide

BW, indeed I've spoken to Fred in the past on the phone and I've spent tons of time on his old
Site. Awesome ideas he had. My seals are actually quite new. I don't know why that one is ragged or torn. I'll have to look at it closer.

Am wondering how I'm going to get all this incorporated into my MC5 when the time comes  8) :o

You really cannot go wrong with Sam Caylors advice

You're going to forget the whole silly idea and just buy a coach with a 60 series lol

Can I ask why we don't just exhaust the air out the rear blower lift door? It could have rubber seals around the holes so that when it's closed it's not leaking suction air. But this would stop the engine from being blasted with salt spray from winter roads, etc.

I believe two reasons MCI might have liked it as is: some if any air going over the engine could help cool it. Just the circulation of whats available possibly.
Another delema may be to force road weather and or air down away versus any possible vacum effect of that rain, air.  I recall some have made some nice louvered doors in this exact type of project (better cooling ) for the big block.
Just some thoughts, good day there

I've never met Fred, but the man is AWESOME! I am incorporating quite a few of his ideas, and I love the scoops. He louvered all of his rear doors, and added cutouts in front of the radiators. Actually, the larger scoops will be good to have, but I learned a little cheat the first trip I drove the bus. Those scoops are wonderful to use when backing up. I refuse to ever use a camera...but using those scoops is my way of cheating... 8)
But I also think Scotts idea might work if thought through. I say this because I have the blower compartment door off, all of the little panels out and it's a bird's eye view of what might be possible. But I have never had any cooling problems...so I'm going to finish that compartment just the way it was...when all the components were oversized.

. . . but my opening are the 7x 14  not the 14 x 14 like it's supposed to have. Talked with Sam Caylor, he says I can just cut the hole out bigger without changing the fan shroud or cage housing. . .

Art -

Doug Pierre in Glendora, CA has an MC-5C that's been repowered with a 6V92T.  In the process, he cut out the squirrel cage openings to 14x14, but left the brace across the center.  It's been that way for over 10 years without any problems.

FWIW & HTH. . .
