Title: Alaska
Post by: lostagain on May 24, 2017, 08:15:23 AM
Anybody going to Alaska this year?

Clifford was talking about going.

You are welcome to stay here at our place on the way. Lots of space to overnight. Ten minutes East of highway 2 near Blackie AB. 1/2 hour South of Calgary.

And I have 4 MC9s if you need a spare bus...

JC,

I think you should advertise in a periodical called Bus Conversion Magazine.  It is nice to have a place in Canada where anyone can fly in and rent an MC-9 fully converted and stocked and ready to travel up the highway to go to Alaska and enjoy the scenery and take the ferry back.  I don't want to beat my bus up driving up that highway, but someone else's bus, no problem.  ;D

No hurry JC.  People usually wait until early summer to go to AK so you have plenty of time yet.  Oh wait, early summer is just around the corner so you had better get cracking on them.  :D

Having lived in Alaska and traveled the Alcan Hwy the best time to visit is the month of May before the summer rains start.

Go for it, we did it last year, 12,000 miles, four months, & bought a piece of land there so we know we'll be back...

Ditto what Dan said.  I made the same run some 45 years ago in  Chevy Carryall 4x4.  My recollections of the beauty of the region remain as fresh in my memory as if it had been last year.  Jack

Made our second trip last year. Roads won't hurt a bus. Met two other bus owners, one in Homer and one in Tok(the landowner. Great trip took all summer. This date last year we were exploring Skagway. Don't let anyone discourage you from the trip. Its a long trip but then again you are exploring about half a continent.
We left the RGV on April 23 and returned November 5.

Hi Bill, nice to hear from you! We recall meeting you in the back of the Chevron station there in Tok. It won't happen this year but looking very forward to returning.

Just returned from a week in Missoula-Hamilton Montana area.

What beautiful scenery. snow on the mountains and nice in the Bitter root valley.

Played in the snow at the pass into Idaho.

Enjoyed the hot springs  Great on old bones and muscles.

:) The question was what areas of interest IN Idaho are recommended. FYI - folks, NorCal means the coast, not the dust bowl where Dave is.  :P :-* ::)

Yep really, We had a property across the street that could have handled about 12 buses but it was a rental house with property attached next door and wasn t ours. They are also moving down the street. Tried to buy it but the mother owner died the kids got real weird and all of a sudden took it off the market and will continue to rent it. There are  pieces or lots there that could be 1/2 acre each but they are just renting the house for 1200.00 a month?... I would build about 4 houses in there and sell them and you could still rent the house for 5 years.

The ranch is pretty tight to get into and the snake shaped driveway I can barley get our 35 footer in there and to the back because of shape and trees. We have taken out two big birch trees and flattened a shrub just getting out to the main road. The Birch was funny because it was real foogy the morning we left and I guess the arm on our Awning grabbed a branch. DW says what was that and I am watching the mirrors and then realized something was hooked to the arm. I stop and get out and it is fully pulled out of the ground and we dragged it 100 feet before we noticed it. Never even felt a tug. No damage just re planted and it coming back. LOL
