Title: Mini Split Choices
Post by: Lin on April 17, 2017, 01:25:29 PM
To be honest, the mini split I want is not for the bus, but for a sunroom we are enclosing.  I have been researching buying a 1 ton unit and find a big price difference between the Chinese units and the top rated brands.  Also, they all seem to state that the warranty is only valid if the unit is installed (or at least connected) by a licensed HVAC technician.  I am guessing that people here that have used mini splits did their own installation, so I was wondering how you handled that situation.  And if anyone has a recommendation on which brand unit to buy, I would be very interested.

I went with a 2 ton mitsubishi mini split and had it installed in our sunroom and it ran flawlessly for 5 years and sold the place and guess it's still a cranking. Had a heat pump model and it was the bomb. Would do it again in a heartbeat. Don't know about the Chinese crap.  Most of the stuff I buy Chinese , have to buy it again as it always breaks or quits.

Bob, what brand did you buy?  Did they have the professional install warranty exclusion?

The only thing I look  for is inverter technology   and toshiba compressor.  I did install my self.  All our still doing their job after 6 yrs oldest. Kilimarie is the one run the most in our home (year round)6 years dropped our utility bills by over 60%.  We also have soleus brand.  And one soleus Non inverter(less desirable). Look for compressor type because the 10 plus brands have mostly same guts with different names.
. The 24000 Kilimarie is 208 (2 hot legs Line1/line2) no ground. Look at decible rating(lowest better)and seer higher=better  at least 16 plus to get energy credit.

I have a lifetime air conditioning license, in fact, I have two.  One for vehicles and one for buildings.  I took a semester night class at the local JC on air conditioning and they offered the tests to get the licenses, so I did.

Lin,check your codes in your area about any place will allow you to replace a unit with no permit but most places require a permit for a new installation and the manufactures want to know where the unit is located at for any recalls or warranty work, lol the warranty is pretty useless anyways on the Chinese units because you cannot get the parts. It is all about money ,the cites, county and state want their share so you buy their licenses to pull a frigging permit
