Title: Generator fuel burn
Post by: TomC on March 26, 2017, 08:00:30 AM
We were just at the Escapee Rally in Tucson at the Pima Fairgrounds. We were dry camping from last Sunday till Saturday. I ran the generator about 90 hours and burned 30 gallons. At $2.75/gal that's $82.50 worth-far less than they were asking for electric hookup ($150 as I remember). I now have 1650 hours on my 10kw Powertech. Good Luck, TomC

That's about 1/3 gallon of diesel an hour.  Since I run my generator off the main tank, I can't easily determine what my generator diesel usage is.  Even if I top it off, park, run the genset, and top it off immediately after camping I still am not sure if I topped it off exactly to the same point.  My diesel tank foams up and the nozzle shuts off early.  I have to trickle the fuel in to get a full tank.

That is about what I burn.  I have found it to vary quite a bit depending on load.  2.8 to 4.1 gallon per hour. The 4.1 was hot and humid for three full days.  2.8 was just the fridge lights and water heater.

I did a test to measure my fuel burn with a 20kw EPS generator running all 5 AC units,it was .71 gal per hour not bad how the Kubotas suck so little fuel.My hydroic heating system uses more fuel when making continuous hot water

It sure is nice to have a separate tank for the generator & have a valve to either connect them or isolate them.
As for my generator usage, I'm looking at about 1/2 gal/ hr.

Kyle-that's what I'm doing on my truck conversion-150gal fuel for the main engine and 75gal fuel for the generator connected by a gravity flow pipe with ball valves on it so I can use it or not. Good Luck, TomC
