Title: What Do You Do
Post by: luvrbus on March 09, 2017, 04:42:20 AM
I have purchased from WW Williams in Phoenix for years my parts guy and friend George has retired now.
When you needed parts for a DD you could tell him what you needed a couple of minutes on the phone the parts where on the way.
I called yesterday for a o-ring on the blower oil supply line for a 8v71 and after 45 minutes with the bs model and serial number the new guy finally found it.
I said ok drop it in a envelope and send it to me George always did this to save shipping cost. This guy says I can't do that,a short story version a friggn $1.85 0-ring cost me $12.50 in shipping.I am still pissed today  ???

Clifford, just face it! Guys like that are mostly gone! Guys like us are mostly gone! I still have one parts house with people who know what they are doing and still have books. I needed a plain radiator cap a while back, not a pressure cap but just a plain cap that seals the system like we used to have on old tractors. The first question asked in every parts store I visited was either "make and model of vehicle" or  "VIN number of vehicle".  I said I didn't have either, It was going on a sawmill. "Caint hep ya!" was the reply. I called my old reliable parts guy and he couldn't find one either but said " I know what you need, I'll  look around as soon as I get a break".  1 hour later he calls me up and said he found one and it would be here the next day. I would use them always except they are an hours away from me since we moved. I guess I will have to move back if I want parts!  >:( >:(

It's just like mechanics, HVAC techs, and most other people now, if they can't use a computer on it, it ain't gonna happen.

Another 25 years and there won't be any old stuff 'cause nobody will be able to fix it!

I'll get off my soap box now

TOM

How are genuine Detroit O-rings better than Buna-N or Viton O-rings that can be bought from any good industrial supplier?   What type of rubber does Detroit use for their O-rings?   Just curious.
