Title: recommend a good grease gun
Post by: David Anderson on February 08, 2017, 11:53:47 AM
It is getting too hard for me to pump the gun.  Anyone recommend a good pneumatic or electric powered gun to grease all the fittings on my Eagle?  I tried a Harbor Freight gun once, but it was useless, so I returned it.  I want something that will really work and take some of the effort out of lubing my chassis parts.  I think it would be money well spent.

Just did a Google search and Lincoln gets good reviews.  Anyone agree?

Yes. The Lincoln is the way to go. I never had any issues with it, and it's super easy to use.

I use the Harbor Freight pneumatic grease gun and it works great.  You just have to remember to put a few drops of air tool oil in the connector before you use it or it will stop working.  Also, if you have plugged up components the grease is not going to go in until you clean out the hardened grease.  I have had to resort to an acetylene torch many times to break down the grease but only use the torch with the grease fitting off or that little round ball at the end of the zerk fitting will shoot out like a bullet.  I know-- I lost a piece of my ear doing it wrong.xx

I personally prefer the Milwaukee battery operated, But the Lincoln is good too, both are pretty pricey

I too ,use the Harbor tool " new matic" grease gun! Have had it for years with no problems. The deal is though these manufacturers some times change suppliers so a gun I bought may not be the same gun you would get.

I also have one of the HF air ones. It's never given me any problems, but squirting grease anywhere is messy business haha. >:(

I just bought the pneumatic one from Harbor Freight but haven't tried it yet. So thanks for the info and tips.

"Fitting" meaning the zerk fitting?

No, its not the zerk that is usually plugged up, it is the "component" that is plugged up, i.e. the king pin housing, the tie rod ends, or anything that uses a shaft with a housing and zerk fittings, etc.  U-joints usually don't plug up, but it sometimes takes a thin adaptor held tight against the zerk to get grease in the u-joint.  I could go on about about worn out zerk fittings and worn out grease gun couplers but this is getting old already.

   HI all;

I use a commercial lube place at most truck stops.  They have the
power and know-how to get most common zerk fittings.  For the
rest, I use a HF air grease gun.
                                 works for me,    Merle.

I'm for the Lincoln too. Would highly recommend. I have one at work that has been in use servicing the fleet for 6 years +. No issues. Replaced the batteries 1 year ago. Put a 30" hose on it so that I can reach into tight places without having to have the unit close. Much easier to maneuver with under units than dragging a high pressure grease hose around from a traditional lubester  or dragging an air hose with a self contained pneumatic unit.  :)

Air powered grease guns have a continuous psi rating the battery powered guns don't,the battery powered guns are more convenient for most users but I don't mind the hoses

I bought the Dewalt battery powered 20V gun . I looked at all of the specs that I could find and it had the highest psi rating of any. It got grease into some fittings I hadn't been able to grease before.

All the good battery powered guns are based on the hand lever Alemite or Lincoln guns,I have no idea what H/F is based on,I have a Alemite 18v I very seldom use

Lincoln pneumatic

Pick a powered gun of some sort.
Tired hands get lazy.
"good enough" and "next time" are not acceptable greasing terms...

happy coaching!

Lol I am old school I buy grease in 5 gal pails (35#) and bulk load my grease guns I hate the paper tubes of grease, most don't know the better grease guns have a fitting to load a gun they are so accustom to the tubes

Yes, check into Lincoln models. Gemplers has a lot of their models, even the close to $500 one that is battery powered and measures the amount of grease dispensed and how empty the cartridge is. One item that I tried out because of tough fittings on trucks and skid-steers, is the LockNLubeĀ® Grease Coupler (Gempler's Item No: 227151), which clamps onto the fitting much better than the normal grease gun tip. It's about $30, and it is listed as being "imported", which nowadays usually means Made in China, but no, this is made in South Africa. They even include an extra set of jaws for repair if you wear it out. I have gotten grease into stiff situations with it that normally would have resulted in a lot of wasted grease. It is also easier to release the fitting because it has a lever release, and it fits 1/8" NPT thread guns and hoses.

If you want to do bulk greasing, that same South African outfit has a foot pedal model grease gun with a 6 1/2 ft. hose (with the locking coupler on it) that holds 282 oz. of grease, and puts out 10,000 psi. In the case of a bus, it might be a two person operation.

At least on my bus there are zerk fittings inside the brakes on the pivots and S cam rollers. If you do grease these, only a quick squirt-don't let the grease ooz out of the fitting, or you might get grease on the brakes. Good Luck, TomC

Of course everything is done at the factory.  You are supposed to take it back to the dealer for the next 50 years to keep it new.

Bruce   In my younger days when I had Hair.  I had a flat top hair cut.

To make it stand up we used some kind of "stuff" that was real stiff.
I think that is the "grease" they are talking about.

How many take the weight off the spindles on front axle with a jack before they grease the kingpins?

Every 3rd time or so, I do.  Have to left the rear everytime to get grease in the spring bushings....bad Bluebird design for those years.

Our ACF Brill had double parallel springs front and rear with lots of grease fittings for the pins and threaded bushings.

What's a kingpin? The mechanic mentioned them. Not sure what they look like.

I realized that I didn't have a picture of a kingpin. So I googled it, and found a picture. Happy to help ;D
