Title: What is this? A GM Bus? AD now linked
Post by: Scott & Heather on January 29, 2017, 06:45:49 PM
What is this? It's a Craigslist find. The guy says it's custom and has a 1000 gallon fuel tank. Wow.

Either A Newell or Featherlite maybe!!! Danged nice looking coach ,but I wonder if it is actually GM powered. With a thousand gallon fuel tank ,I would only have to fill up about once every five years .Around three thousand dollars for a fill up !!! WOW!!!

Newell is the only one that used that location for a entry door, and you could order a raised roof and that looks like a high roof to me,probably does have a series 60 engine

GM has not been affiliated with DETROIT DIESEL for about 30 years now. However, maybe this guy just likes GMC trucks and put that badge on there just for kicks.. I've seen PIERCE fire trucks around here with automobile name badges on the grill.
Just to have fun with low information people.
It does look a bit like a NEWELL now that you mention it.

I'm gla Clifford has spoken already as I had no idea what it was and was going to suggest it may be some kind of "Frankenbus" from Sam Walker or something like that.

I also was going to mention that short front entry door in the front bumper, but Clifford cleared that up too!  ::)
;D  BK  ;D

PS looking at buses on Ebay or somewhere I recently saw an MCI with a Chevy or GMC grill form the late 80's on it and GMC letters below the windshield!

BK the door on the front is for a roll out generator not for short people  ;D

Yeah I caught that after your first post, but before I read any of the posts I thought "Oh cool look at the short front entrance door!"
OH well can't be right on everything I guess!

In the 90's Newell would raise the entire roof or a section I think the ones with the rear roof raise were neat.I have no doubt that was a custom build Newell since that is the only way Blades build a Newell
Title: Fun And Easy To Stick On A Different Emblem ...
Post by: HB of CJ on January 30, 2017, 07:54:49 AM
Way back in about 1976 or so we made up and magnetically attached to the front body just below the windshields on our 1968 American LaFrance Century Series narrow body fire engine (pumper) the words ... HAULS ARSE.   Because it did.  Easily removable.  Fast for its day.  Pumped 8V71.  About 27,000 pounds.  Fuller T905 tranny.  About 75mph at 2400 rpm.

Long ago, far away.  Good memories.   Old old Engine 2.  Bakersfield Fire Dept CA.   ISO Class 1 then.  But ... the gas tank only held 50 gallons.  :)

Regarding incorrect manufacturer logo application...

Yes, from the religious order of busnuts, this is absolute heresy, burn them at the stake!

But, to many of the unwashed sinners, the badging on a vehicle is just jewellery, and they unwittingly just stick it on a different finger, on a different hand and on a different bus...

Please pray for them, for they know not what they do??

As for 1000 gallons.... maybe the units are mixed up? Litres is believable, the new coaches are running around with +800 litre tanks.

3.78 litres makes a US gallon

happy coaching!

Were is the craigslist link so we can look. It could be a Newell but to me it looks to be 96" wide not 102". Seems to look very narrow and high.

You can see for sure it is about 45 ft long

It does have many styling cues from a early nineties Newell like the door, front mounted gennie, and those big Ford 150 Headlights.

But it is NOT a Newell. Newell customizes any way the customer wants but the windshield, door arrangement, and radiator setup are NOT Newell DNA.

Richard is right, besides Newells of that era were all 102's, not 96 inches.

The picture does not have enough resolution, when you enlarge it, it gets very blurred.

Looks like two live axles in the back too...

My guess is a MC7 combo or a very heavily modified scenic.

The interior is nice, but doesn't look to be the level of quality one normally sees in a Newell.

Wonder how tall it actually is - looks like it is at least 13'-6"

RE the 1000 gal fuel tank - Would be nice to have that option . . . . sometimes, it is nice to not worry about fuel for a while longer.  ;D

That weighs 8000lbs. It's like pulling two toads. At some point it's costing mileage to have that much fuel on board

Not a bad but for $35000.00, the windshields look to be Prevost. Look like the ones on mine.

Well I now go back and stand by my "Frankenbus" conclusion!
I once saw a bus like this on Sam Walkers site and later saw it on Ebay but it wasn't painted yet either time I saw it so it may or may not be the same critter.

Look at the photos on Bus'n USA from 2004 there a bus that looks similar that the guy was working on it was a 01 Eagle, the roof line is too flat to be a bus and with all the bays and slides it has to have a frame I would think

Respectfully, I find it ugly. There, I said it.

JC

At BusnUSA about 10 years ago, there was a custom MCI that this guy had built from the ground up. Some of you might remember.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to also think so.   It has all the aesthetic beauty of a stepvan.   The front end reminds me slightly of the GM Futurliners, but without their charm  -  maybe that's why there's a GM badge there?

Agree JC glad you said it...
And Futureliner sorry John but charm should never be used in the same statement either, All opinions are not that of this station and are entirely my own.

Clifford the FMCA EGG looks like "126814"

I thought we'd all tacitly agreed it was ugly right from the start of this thread. It IS ugly, no question about it. But in a strangely compelling and rather cool way - personally I'd paint it bright yellow and put 'UNION PACIFIC' down the sides in big letters...

The UGLY part is exactly what I recall the most from the one on Sam Walkers site!

That right thar is funny! An I don't care who doesn't think so!

That is true, but, is the added cost worth it? Who says you have to keep the tank full?
A bigger problem for me is the space required.

A friend says that after 20,000+ miles, he can't tell any significant difference in fuel use with or without his full size Dodge 4X4 truck as a toad.

6.1 mpg without, maybe 6.0 with the Dodge.

They need to be shot by a firing squad!

Yes, that Scenicruiser is almost unrecognizable, but if you want more space while being able to eliminate the sunken aisle without changing the framing and retaining the big baggage bays, this bus does that. It's at least a little more graceful than the squared-off box one.

The FMCA plack looks like 176814 which was identified as owned by Albert and JoAnn Roberts of Winter Haven, Florida owning a GMB which is a GMBus. This from 2007, the last year FMCA published the member numbers.

It may look ugly to some but the detail and craft work on that thing is beyond the average bus nut it had to cost a fortune to build

With the front so squared off, and the tandem axles, it might be a stretched out Cab-over truck body originally, but then how was the engine handled in the rear? Definitely a lot of money was spent.
