Title: MC8 needs fuel pump in Quartzsite
Post by: Geoff on January 19, 2017, 02:42:23 PM
A regular poster on this board, Ed Vanlandingham, has an MC8 with an 8V92TA and custom radiator, is broken down in Quartzsite.  His fuel pump went out and he is having his bus towed to his reserved campground across from Rice Ranch.  Does anyone at the Bus Rally have a good fuel pump and would someone be willing to put it on for him?  Its an easy job, the anti-freeze does not have to be drained to get to the fuel pump.  If you can help out please call Ed at his bus 928 300 9046

Thanks

Hey since the discussion is started, how do you swap pumps with the coolant crossover tube right in the way? I need to learn this...

With a 1/2 in wrench lol the tube is not in the way unless someone has installed the offset in the tube the wrong direction

When changing the fuel pump (8v71 or 92) the fuel lines and wiring harness is what usually gets in the way.  The crossover pipe has a raise or hump in it so you can get to the fuel pump.

P.S. I haven't heard from Ed tonight, I'm sure he will call me to go to Quartzsite if it isn't fixed yet.....

Geoff, Ed's fuel pump was good for some reason the the fuel pressure switch is activating the shut down he is good now.
Since he is your customer you can figure out the wiring I think it is the run switch in the rear start panel.
Ed had to drive 250 miles to buy a fan belt so I left and came home but he is running .He needs to come to you anyway and have you fix some of those frigging oil leaks

I went through the process of checking out the shutdown to see if that was the problem and Ed told me it was working after I guided him through a few tests.

Thanks again Cliff

I know it's not the pump it is strong, pumps a good stream under pressure with just the starter and when I finally got the run switch to latch on the rear start it never shut down again.I don't know how the system is wired I didn't see any alarmstats on the engine only senders

Hey Scott...
I had the same question.
My crossover tube is above the fuel pump, but there is a water bypass tube between the thermostat housings that is in front of the fuel pump on my 8V71.

Those are easy to get off a MCI,a Eagle doesn't have the pipe extension from the fuel pump the fitting and hoses are connected at the fuel pump those can be a little more challenging

Many thanks to all who came to our aid in Quartzsite. Cliff after correcting my dumb mistake of having one of the valves turned the wrong way when I primed it, it now runs like it should. Coming home from Q I just had to keep it under 2100 RPM. My special thanks to David for all his help in getting the new fan belt off and on, wound up having to push the rear bumper out a half inch, don't know how I managed that. Also to Mike for setting it up so we could make our spectacular entrance on a $195000 truck and trailer. Cliff you were a fantastic help in your knowledge and willingness to jump in. Your assessment was correct on that valve, I am going to take it off and plug the hole with a plug. Geoff I thank you again for all the time and help you gave me over the phone. We have been to this rally twice once in the Jeep and once on the trike when we were with other 4 wheel drive friends so not to many people knew us. This year all that changed as I don't think there was one guy not lined up to see us come in. To all the other people who gave us moral support and suggestions thanks to you also. We will be there next year.
Had a great time. I sure learned a lot more about a 8V92.

Most of you probably know this...... I found out the hard way when putting a pump on an 8V-71 that the pump will not self-prime.  Luckily it was on a towboat and easy to get to.  You have to prime the pump before it will lift fuel from the tank.  Some people prime the pump with ATF before installing it on the engine.

No BK I only make this kind of grand entry once, I Hope. Yes when Geoff change the fuel pump he primed it

Yes, the fuel pump on a two-stroke Detroit is a gear pump, so it is not self priming like a diaphram fuel pump.  It is more like an oil pump, if you are familiar with engines.  I'm glad Ed made it home, and thanks to everyone who helped him.  I would have made Quartzsite myself in my bus, but I have been laid up for the last four months with a back injury.

It was interesting to see the driver never get in the cab of the truck until it was done. He did everything remotely as he was walking around doing things and watching what the truck and trailer were doing to include move the truck forward at the end of it all. Pretty neat vehicle.
Kind of felt like a  Boy seeing a fire truck for the first time. I wanted to get in there and play with the controls. That probably wouldn't have been good!...... ;D
