For those that worry about (with good reason) or those that need a replacement & can't find one.
The notorious Fan Hub on our IL671 in our 4104s is being made available again at a very expensive price tag.
They're also used on the 8V71s - part # 5167273
They're going for over $1400 a pop on Ebay
I found another on line source (egmCarTech) that has them for $1099
The GM Bus Guy offers something different for around $900
I destroyed a radiator back in the early 80s when our Fan Hub failed - actually it went out twice in two days after trying to jury rig it to get us home
Back then it cost $375 from Western Diesel Electric in CA
Anyway I thought I'd post this for those who have been concerned or trying to hunt one of those beasts down
Thanks Dan, I know that was one of the ticking time bomb areas of the 4104, looking at my radiator, it looks like it happened once already so good to know.
I check for play on the fan every time I remember to look , when yours went was there any play or signs before it decided to scrap out?
I saw a pallet of 24 of those sale on a Government surplus site damn I should have bought those it sold for $1184.00,PTO coupling they work on the 53 and 92 series too
. Do you mean that the hub breaks off of the shaft or the flange breaks off.?
Roger 4106
The hub is comprised of two steel cylinders inside another with about 3/8" of solid rubber mold fused between cylinders the inside cylinder is bolted over crankshaft, out side cup with flange bolts to fan. When there is play (movement) of the fan due to deteriorated rubber the two cylinders break loose from each other & the fan sails into the radiator. Back in 82 a radiator core was $475, wonder what one of those beasts cost today? My fan at the time had very small amount of movement. I didn't think it was as bad as it needed to be to fail like it did. Fooled again....
