Post by: MCI9Guy on January 15, 2017, 08:41:57 AM
I was wondering and couldn't find, what was the approx retail price of my 1983 MCI 9 ?

This particular coach entered service as a NJ Transit Authority bus.

a shade over $105 000, or so, for an MC9 back then.

The NJT contract, if you can find a press release and do the math, will be a bit higher, inflated with spares, warranty, training, etc

I just ran that through an inflation calculator and the 1983 105K dollars equals $254,438.40 in 2017 dollars.

Somehow that number makes me feel good.

That is a nice impressive #, but now let's look at a realistic depreciation figure and it brings it back down to about $3000 +/-!

Sorry don't mean to rain on your parade, just try'n to keep it real.

I bought an '83 MCI 9 a year ago. It is gutted and the conversion was started but never finished. A lot of parts to work with. All for $1000, needed fuel and batteries an I drove it home.(about 75 mile drive without heat and 20 degree temps)

That is right in line with my 1984 Eagle, which sold for $155,000 new as an Entertainer Coach with 12 bunks.

Yep I bought a new 450hp 8v92TA in the crate with stater and alternator for $14,102.00 with tax in 1984 now they sell for $51,000.00 +. A new off the shelf B500 Allison sells for $32,000.00 now

There was an article in the trade press back around the turn of the millennium, doing various return on investment calculations.

The capital cost of a motorcoach from 1980 to 2000 had risen at a rate far higher than inflation, and far higher than the rise in rates charged to the customer.

In 1980, in rough terms, the new coach could gross income in a year, the capital outlay for buying the coach.

Unfortunately, 20 years later, the gross income had not changed much, but the cost of the coach had tripled.

One of the reasons we saw all the mom and pop shops close down, the industry consolidated, access to, and cost of borrowing the capital to carry the longer rate of return was simply lost to the small carrier.

Exchange rates etc etc, a seated coach, video equipped, will cost over CDN$750 000.

It better be going down the road 23 days out of 30... and not for chump change.

happy coaching!

Wow! I still have my build sheet or original price for my Cole Customs Coach and it was marked down to $435,000 in 1991. The owner I bought it from picked it up in Las Vegas.
