Why make a beautiful old Crown into something resembling a generic S&S plasti-box? Yugh. The old Crowns and Gilligs were attractive in their own right, without needing to doll them up like that one. Couldn't the converter at least have used a Highway Post Office (the ones that looked like they were coming out of the box they were delivered in), or one of the mobile TV studios that Crown made for several big names in the 1960s?
I think I'll have to eat some more fortified fruit cake to calm my nerves after seeing that photo.
John
But it was" Freddy the Freeloader's" coach "And May God Bless Goodnight", LOL 8)
Wow. Everything else deleted.

Exactly, ugly enough to turn a funeral procession down a dead-end road ...
Sort of the "Crown"ing insult.
I could not resist some bashing. Must be a slug going down the road. Or suffers from severe overheating. The observed radiator opening is way way too small. Mine was three times that size.
The manner of the front roof line modifications to make it into a motor home MAY have destroyed the roof line structural integrity. No front roof strength. May have. Has the narrow curved front glass.
I have no idea where replacement wind shield glass could be found. The big front bumper actually looks OK. Lifted from a transit bus? The front big mirrors are in the wrong place. Just me.
If offered at less than 5 $grand$, then perhaps a good project Bus Conversion. We have no idea as to the actual physical condition, nor the age of the major interior coach conversion stuff. I will pass.
But .... if they GAVE it too me I would take it. Crowns Forever! :)
The ad says it now has a Cummins 855. I wonder what it originally had - maybe a Hall-Scott gasoline from looking at the size of the radiator grille? In the 1970s Crown changed the design and height of the frame rails to accommodate the wider Cummins 855 (these buses have the squared-off tops to the wheel arches, unlike earlier Crowns with round wheel arches). 855s sit quite close to the ground even on later buses, so if one's been shoehorned under this old bus it must be really close to the ground. It's not hard to high-center pancake Crowns on very uneven road surfaces - methinks this could be a real problem for this bus. And I also wonder about the cooling.
The fluted sides indicate that it was never a school bus, but instead a tour bus.
John
PS - Where are the all-important floor hatches over the engine and transmission? It looks like they've been covered over.
Some of the motor mounts could be modified to raise that big 855 up a couple of inches. Looks like the cooling needs were not addressed for the engine swap?
I do not know if Crown offered the Cummings 743 or earlier engine in 1960. The small radiator opening is a concern? Dunno. Lots of questions about this Crown.
But ... for its era I bet it was a super Bus Conversion. Did Red himself drive it? Dunno that either. Back then Armstrong Steering was the only one available?
Also somewhat, (somewhat) curious how the physical chassis layout was done. Holding tanks. APU. Re arranging the guts of the chassis to convert?
Crowns Forever!! :)
I considered this bus at one time, but decided to use my old Kenworth instead.
Please everyone-it is Cummins-no G.
Speaking of old Crown's..I'm looking for a 10 Sp Roadranger for my '49 SuperCoach. Can be an RTO910 or an RT910 (can be made an RTO). Any leads would be welcome.
Thank you

ps a Model 20 Jake for a 220 cummins would also be a great stocking stuffer...
Happy New Year All

I happen to have a RT910 sitting in my garage that came out of a Scenicruiser, along with a bellhousing and clutch (double disk, if I recall right). The catch is, I am about 1400 miles away. I intended to put in my 05 Eagle, but I never got around to it. :-\
The 1400 miles can be overcome. PM me with you terms and well see what we can do.

Yes you can. Requires a complete take down. I have seen it done, but never have done it. Some help here please. Does a overhaul of the 910 series require special tools?
Been too long ago. Proper factory gears must be used. Just swapping or flipping gears MAY not work. The RTOO910 was rare and had a .79 9th and a .66 10th. Enjoy.
Crowns forever. If memory serves the Jake for the pancake 743 220 CUMMINS required special parts to either increase the oiling or for returning the oil to the special pan.
