Title: On the Road to Little Rock
Post by: Kwajdiver on January 22, 2007, 04:34:00 PM
After being in Mobile, Alabama since November.  Raytheon has told me to move to a new RADAR site.  Tomorrow I start toward Little Rock, Arkansas.  I should be there at least three months.

Unless someone tells me NOT, I'm departing Mobile on Hiway 98 to Hattiesburg.  Hiway 49 to Jackson.  After Jackson, Mississippi I may jump on 55 North.   ORRRR, would I be better off to take I-20 out of Jacson then North on 65 to Little Rock.

Not is a huge hurry, but need to be there by late afternoon Wednesday.

Big Blue MCI-9  "Bill Vill" is on the road,

Bill

Bill,

I've been over both routes from Jackson many times and I can tell you that 65 is not a lot of fun. Many small town speed traps and mostly two lane through farm country. Very scienic if you're not in a hurry.

I55 to Memphis and I40 to LR is far better.

I live north of LR about 130 mi and take I55 to MS and LA quite often.

Personally have driven the interstates alot in my truck driving career.  Now the scenic route is what I want to take, so long as you have the time.  Good Luck, TomC

Tom,

By the time he gets to Jackson he will probably have his fill of scenic driving because 49 into Jackson has a lot of old broken concrete pavement!!65 isn't too bad except around some of the small towns where it is also kind of rough. Otherwise it is a nice drive.

I like scenic drives but not when they rattle the windows.

Point well taken-especially in Arkansas.  I know in Texas, Ariz, Calif, and other states, the scenic routes are usually actually better pavement than the big roads.  But, once again, Arkansas is in a class all by itself.  Good Luck, TomC

Hi Guys,

I'm sitting at a small Exxon Truck Stop some 10 miles South of Little Rock.   Did my overnight in the Wal-Mart parking lot in McGehee, AR.

I thought the ride up on 65 was nice.   Lots of farm land, not much traiffic. Found a lot of the road in really good shape.  Tuned in a couple oldies stations and just cruised down the road.  Really, isn't that what it's all about?

Do we have any BusNuts in Little Rock, I would like to hook up with them.  I should be here two or three months.

Need to go check out the RADAR site by the airport, then find a place to park.  Wish my trip had been longer.

What a way to see America, and she is beautiful.............. :)

You said it!

Might make an interesting poll. How much of our travel is by secondary roads?

If you happen to run into Joe Kamarunas at the LR Airport, tell him a busnut from Pennsylvania said HI! ::)
I believe Joe works for the FAA maintaining that navigation stuff (I'm not in aviation), but really has a passion for woodworking!

I was stationed in Little Rock for six years and loved the area, but duty called elsewhere!

TomC,

What you say was true years ago. I remember when it was such a relief to get to MO roads. Not so today, AR roads are much better than MO, LA and OK. TN and TX roads are excellent.

The interstates into Ok City from all directions are about as bad as I have ever seen, even the toll road south is awful. I55 in LA is pretty bad in most areas.

I40 and I30 into LR used to be as bad as any but you will be surprised how good they are now and those awful two-way service roads have been eliminated.
