Title: Generator Starter, lost magical smoke
Post by: Beachfinn on November 08, 2016, 04:16:05 PM
oh boy, it just keeps on going...
got back to the bus today, started the genset (onan 10kw HDKAG), somehow managed too much load and tripped the breaker at the genset. Went to reset and decided to start from the genset start switch instead remote switch. About 10 minutes later noticed a cloud of smoke coming out of the generator bay, grabbed fire extinguisher and manually shut the control voltages to the generator. Nothing on fire, but with a closer examination found the strater super hot with evidence of magical smoke getting out.

So it seems that the starter never disengaged and burnt itself out.  Obviously it won't start, the solenoid clicks but thats it. got the part number and will get with Cummings Power in the morning in Tampa.
again, not a bad moment for that to happen, but still...

I've done that too--it sucks!  After replacing the genny completely I discovered that Lucas Electric (you know, the "home before dark" guys) sells spray cans of replacement smoke for whatever burns up.  Sure wish I'd found out before the $2000 purchase!!!!   Good luck, Jack
