Title: desperately seeking dds50
Post by: kjurkic on October 16, 2016, 07:00:45 AM
Hello all

I know its a long shot, but I am in a bind; I am hoping the someone here might have, or knows someone who has a Detroit 50 series in good running condition for sale in western Canada, or perhaps even NW US (although we CDN$ take a beating on exchange at present).

I recently had re-build diagnosis due to extreme cylinder wear and guzzling oil to the point of "Fill 'er up with oil, and check the fuel!"

My intake sprung leak after air filter during rough dry gravel road trip.  :-[

Please PM me if you know of such a beastie, thanks

Ken

Thanks for that JC.
I don't know what I was typing wrong but neither of those showed up in early pages of a google search for me. It seems Canadian businesses are notoriously bad at establishing a good ranking.

Hi all

Just an update in case anyone is still curious.

I ended up buying another bus. Here in Canuckistan, a basic in-frame was looking to be $10-$12k, with the possibility of doubling that if crank was scored and/balance shafts damaged.

I am not junking the old bus, just now have time to search for second-hand S50, and can arrange space so I can do the swap myself and save a few $g's.

On a related note - Series 60 engines seem to be flooding market at present - I can easily get one for 1/2 of the asking of an S50 around here. However, I do not know if the engine cradle on the RTS can carry the extra weight. Anyone know of such an upgrade?

Thanks
Ken

I posted this link a couple of weeks ago. The ad is still up. Southwestern Ontario but it apparently only has 150 hours on it.

I was at Empire Truck Parts in Calgary the other day, and saw at least two S50s. I didn't ask about them, but you could look them up and inquire.

Why not rebuild you're engine. Then you know what you got. Getting another used engine is just asking for trouble since you don't know what's in it. Getting a rebuilt engine will probably cost you more than to have yours rebuild. You may be able to get by with just a cylinder kit replacement. Good Luck, TomC

There's also the issue of balance shafts on a S50; if you replace them, you KNOW that they're done.

Thanks to everyone who responded.

I ended up buying another RTS bus because it was 1/2 the price of a rebuild.

I bought myself time to locate a good low-mileage take-out and find a workspace where I can swap it out. There is a seller in Alberta with a few CNG S-50's for a low price. Just need to convert back to diesel heads.
