Title: New but dated 2010 Tire Question
Post by: scanzel on October 05, 2016, 08:37:52 AM
My bus needs two new steer tires, one has cracking from sun exposure the other looks ok but they were new went I bought the bus in 2005 now it is 2016 so they are 11 years old. They are Michelin XZE 11R 24.5. A local dealer has two Michelin XZE2 left in stock from when he did sell Michelin but they are 2010 dated so they are already 6 years old. He wants $534.00 each plus installation and balancing. I see them on the internet for $491 to $535 plus shipping so no real deal there. Should I go back and tell him too much for a 6 year old tire and if he will go lower should I buy these and take a chance. He is not offering any kind of warranty because he is no longer a Michelin dealer and the tires are 6 years old. Thoughts ? Thank you.

Michelin states 10 year casing warranty on many of their tires. I would get the newest tires you can since tires time wear out. Good Luck, TomC

Yes.  Simple to take care of this issue.  "Thank you", turn around, walk out.  Time is always the issue with tires on our buses.  Even if you're offered a silly low price (and these aren't) for an old tire it's not worth it when you factor in risk and also the cost of dismounting and mounting new ones before long -- just buy new ones now.

I'm curious as to why you would consider getting them there. Find a Michelin dealer that carries that size and go there. You can get them at a significant discount through FMCA, and Clifford says you can get that much of a discount at other places. Of course you don't live in summer sucks Arizona. Check Michelin's site for more tire dealers in your general area and do some calling. Mention that fresh tires are very important to you due to the low annual miles you run.

He's had those sitting around for this long he is not going to get any bites at this point. so he is hopping someone will come along and he will probably take a lot less than he says if you offer 1/3 of the price and he says no you leave and wait or go somewhere else. Some money for his old tires is better than none and he knows it. Mounting included. Just what I would do to cover the new ones you will have to buy later anyway!...

I agree with Dave. Offer him $150 each. When he says no, drop you phone number on the counter and tell he has 3 days to change his mind. No negotiating. Take it or leave it.

He'll a have no trouble selling them to a broken down trucker or someone that doesn't know about tire age. Just like the new car dealer you've known that wouldn't dicker on price.

Federal law lets dealers sell the tires up to 6 years old I doubt the $150.00 offer will fly,he is not offering you deal though at those prices

You never know. He's sitting on $1000 worth of junk if they don't sell soon. They're already 6 years old. The question is, will he take $300 or lose the full $1000. Or, will he simply ignore the law and push them off on some unsuspecting trucker? He's sat on them this long.

Yep My Dad always said," You never know until you Try" Weather he would take it or not it's worth asking. If he says no with no counter end of deal done.

Tires sitting on the shelf age faster than those that get exercised regularly. Something to do with the plasticizers leaching out when they aren't used - working the rubber pulls the plasticizers back in.

As for 6 year old brand new tires - I would NOT use them if they were given to me. Absolutely not worth the risk.

Get the newest tires you can find - once mounted on your coach, the time flies.

Thank you for all your input on this. After a few days of pondering this I called back and canceled and the person just said ok. Didn't even try to ask why, I think he knew why. I went with GCR Tire where is got the six new ones on the drives and tags. GCR has 200 locations nationwide so if I have an issue on the road they are possibly available. Plus the manager at GCR new my father and I may get a discount. Thank you.  ;D ;D

GCR is a good tire shop I have dealt with them for many years I hope they don't change since Bridgestone purchased the co.
