Title: OIL CHANGE again

I dug up some old service records from my Greyhound files believe it or not Greyhound changed the oil every 15,000 miles and used Gulf Lube XHD 40w oil.

The records I have shows the engine in 2289 a MCI 5 the 1st engine replacement for the 8v71 was done at 307,116 miles it must have been wore out the mains on the crank were turned to 0.20 under and so were the rods that engine only last 220,193 miles.

Very interesting their E inspection at 200,000 miles they even changed the blower drive

I have to wonder how long the original engine would have gone if the oil was changed at 10,000 miles or 7,500. I assume they changed the filter each time, but maybe between oil changes as well. The current oils might have performed better under the same conditions. Changing it more often than optimum (what ever mileage that is) does not hurt anything other than the wallet. Most of us will not put on enough mileage to notice a big difference in wear, but we like the peace of mind (even though delusional) of knowing we have used the best oil available with frequent changes.

We drive new H-345 Prevost coaches with Volvo engines and the shop changes the oil at 17000 miles.....Bill

Newer engines + latest lubes = much longer service intervals. I still have a hard time accepting this as "authorized service intervals" as todays engines dump so much crap back into the oil instead of out the exhaust pipe that I would think the intervals should be shorter, not longer but meh, what do I know.

2 stroke engines need to be changed more often with oil. The new DD engines from Detroit have 50,000mi oil changes. Try that with a 2 stroke and by the second oil change the engine will be worn out. Good Luck, TomC

The 4905 service manual recommends 4000 miles in regular use. That Greyhound engine may have needed rebuilding due to an over heat, low oil incident, excessive lugging of engine in a particular situation or normal rebuilding hours. Smaller injectors add less soot to oil over time than larger ones. Heaver load on engine or light load or length of idle time  or engine running temp.also effect this.

Greyhound ran C 60 injectors in all their 8v71 engines FWIW,I read some more records they stayed with the 15,000 mile oil change.300,000 miles is not bad for a 8v71 longevity in a bus I seen 4 strokes that didn't last that long in a bus

depends how often and how much you have to add... imo.

That may have been during the period of time that GHL was burning off used motor oil in the fuel tanks to save fuel.  They dropped that program, couldn't have done the engines much good.  Still, 300K+ is not bad on original engine for those days.
