Title: Insurance and appraisal
Post by: Dreadnought on September 26, 2016, 01:46:42 PM
Hey folks! I'm new to the boards and I'm at a crossroads in my life right now and feel the call of the open road. I've owned my MCI since 2012 and she's called Dreadnought after a famous British naval warship.

I need to look into insurance for my RV. Is there anyone that anyone here strongly recommends?

Is this for a 'professionally built' bus conv or not?

I have a 1964 MCI MC5 conversion.

When I first bought it- I was insured by GMAC (I think they're called something else now).

I phoned ExplorerRV last week and they gave me a quote. They required that I get my bus professionally appraised.
How do I go about getting my vehicle professionally appraised?

I'm open to suggestions

Thanks!

When I had to get an appraisal years ago for insurance it wasn't easy. I looked into guys that appraise classic cars and finally found one that would do the bus. He had to see the bills for the parts that went into the conversion and anything that was done. After he was done he said he would never do it again.

GMAC is now National General. All I can say is my last dealing with them, (over a hail claim), was the WORST experience I've EVER had with an insurance company. I couldn't find another company fast enough.
We have Progressive now. Not all that and kinda pricey for full timers. BUT at least I have been treated fairly

If you just want insurance so you can drive it and be covered for damages to other peoples properties progressive is cheap and easy.  Bit you get what you pay for.

If you want to have it insured for what its actually worth, good luck.  You may get lucky and get close but you'll need a custom policy and appraisal and it'll cost you to get that if you can find someone to do it.

We went progressive because we just needed it insured to drive.  We went through 3 insurance companies before progressive and it was problematic.  No one really understood what we were insuring.  Pictures, receipts, driving it to the insurance place and we would get a quote for an American Eagle RV.  It was nuts.  Progressive actually insured us for an Eagle Model 10 motorcoach weighing 34.5k lbs.

My biggest concern with other insurers was that we would get into an accident and they would say it was not what was insured.  With progressive it would be - ummm...  its 25 years old, not custom insured as antique and we will give you scrap for it.  But we were insured for what we were driving.

Good luck and please let us know how it turns out.  So many looking for a decent policy that will actually cover an assessed value.

call  ExplorerRV ask them who to use . they set me up with a guy that did appraisals on old cars and trucks and rvs but I think he has retired . the cost in 2006 was $ 250 for the service and he did a great job . worked with them  ExplorerRV and myself .
