Hi,
I have a leaking water pump on my 8V71. What would be better a rebuilt pump or have the seal replaced? We are in Carbondale, Co. heading southeast through Denver.
Thank you,
Bob

Is it leaking water or oil? Water seal can be done in place by removing the cover. Oil seal is the first bit you install so you will have to remove the pump. Regardless seals are the way to go if you can source them.
Coolant is leaking from behind the pump.
The seal would be easier - don't have to fuss with the gear mesh if you don't take them apart.
We are also leaking water from pump . I'm gonna take advice and rebuild pump but gonna try and get home I think mine seems to have stopped .

I went to the Detroit Reman website and found two shops in Denver. One does not work on anything older than 10 years and the other quoted me a price of $385 for the pump and 10hrs labor.
Run from that shop that will take 10 hrs to change a water pump. It takes longer to take the water out and put it back than to change the pump.

yup..what goose said...run.
what ever happened to flat rates ? 48 hours used to be a total time for out of frame rebuild....steam clean, hot tank, cold tank included.
A water pump change on a GM with a 8v71 is not a walk in the park
To change the water pump on my 8V-71 with V-drive, I had to remove the radiator. 10hrs sounds like a deal to me. Good Luck, TomC
