Title: bin door safety latches
Post by: bigred on September 12, 2016, 11:58:57 AM
Hey folks:I am in the process of changing some struts on the bin doors of my XL .I also wanted to change the safety latches while I was doing this as it will make changing the struts a much easier job.All the ones on the bus have gotten straitened out(not on my watch).Called Prevost this am and ordered my struts ,a little under twenty eight bucks which is a very fair price indeed ,but when he priced me on the safety latches ,they were 36 dollars and change each .Sorry folks!!! Ido10t error!!!

I have a 1989 Prevost bus conversion and I just changed all the gas struts but not sure what you mean by safety latches. My cargo doors just lock the door handle with a keyed lock.

I believe he means the safety pins that can be inserted into the arms to lock them in the open position while you work on the door struts. Most times these are missing or bent out of shape from being slammed in the door mechanism by accident. Of my six baggage bays, only one still had a perfect pin. The others were missing from the end of the chains or were squashed beyond usability. I just made my own and held them to the door with Dollar store magnets to keep them out of the way.

Or he could mean the sprung latches that hold it open when fully up. They have a triangle head on them that hold the door up. When you go to close them you need to push them in and then the door can close. I have seen where it pissed people off to have to push them in, so they flatened them so they would'nt catch any more. I know i have grabbed a door to close it and forgot to push it first and cursed a little bit. They can be a pain but they have a purpose, better than having it fall on your head if a gas strut gives out!

My doors just go up and then I just pull them down to close, never saw an safety latches. Maybe someone removed them. When I changed out my gas closers I just opened the door and cut a 2 by 4 the proper length to hold it up while changing. Had one close by accident and boy are those doors heavy almost lost my legs.

Ryan: I think you get the idea .Actually ,I am working on an antique ,94 CC Prevost. This is a metal hook that is mounted on the bin door .It is about 3' long with a bolt hole in one end and the other end is curled into a hook that clicks on one of the arms on the bin doors and holds it in the open position
,a very helpful thing in cold weather when the bin doors tend to droop. Also comes in handy when changing struts . Charlie at Prevost said they very seldom ever sold these and the only place they had a few in stock was in Canada,so evidently they are not being replaced. The Prevo part number is 480657.

Antique you say. 94 eh. I have a similar setup on my 80. lol. If you need them, it sure beats a block of wood that you WILL inevitably knock out. It sure sucks having the bay door hit you in the back of the head. Don't ask! I am sure a local fab/metal shop could make you these for fairly cheap. Ask around.

Yep:I am going to try rebending one of the ones that are on there.Evidently ,people do not tend to replace these .At 36.00 apiece and limited stock ,I am assuming that one of two things is happening.Either this is not a high priority item with Prevo or they made a mistake entering the price.
