Title: Bay door locks
Post by: Tikvah on September 05, 2016, 11:08:14 AM
When I bought my bus I quickly removed the air locks on the bay doors.  My bus doesn't hold air long term and I park for months at a time.  I was determined to install electric relay locks but as time got short I simply picked up a set of pad-locks.
The problem was solved and I never thought about it much after that.
But my pad-locks are getting rusty and inconvienent and I'm thinking about electric locks again.
For a poor guy like me, what's the current suggestion?

I see those are available in "push" or "pull".
Correct me if I'm wrong, but a "pull" lock can only unlock when power is applied.
What happens if a wire breaks or some minor failure?

I kept my air locks. I installed a small air pump (the one used in the Brake Buddy brake control system) in my bay and hooked it into the air lines feeding the bay locks. Connected it to an unused switch on the left dash. Now I just have to flip the switch on and hold in the button until it sticks. I also made some metal clips to go over the shaft of each air solenoid to prevent it from automatically locking when the air drops. I typically leave the clips on, but there are times I want to lock the bays and it's a matter of charging the air supply and removing the clips and then releasing the button to lock all of the bay doors.

Works for me.

If you still have your air locks, I might be interested in acquiring them from you.

I've always had the keyed locks. You guys with air locks are a lucky bunch :-/

Here are the ones I got. Saw them at Quartszite on Bruce's Bus bay doors. They worked great and he even used a keyring fob he bought somewhere to open them remotely. I bought 10 but haven't got them in yet.

He mounted them on the back side of the door and drilled a hole so when they were activated the rod went into the hole and kept the door locked. 6.00 each.

I bought something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Universal-Power-Actuator-12-Volt-Motor/dp/B00CZBQCR2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1473141529&sr=8-1&keywords=auto+power+lock (https://www.amazon.com/Universal-Power-Actuator-12-Volt-Motor/dp/B00CZBQCR2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1473141529&sr=8-1&keywords=auto+power+lock)

My ultimate plan is to have them actuate a deadbolt, I found some deadbolt replacements that slide really well. I also have a wireless key/receiver for them. All said and done it should cost under $75 for the 6 doors... should  :P

I have 6 of those with the remote control but decided to go the 24v route with a single pin to lock the handles like the air locks did, I got mine off Ebay for 40 bucks

LOL I see you were on F/B Dave looking good under the trees  ;D

Dave

I see that now, link didn't work for me last night for some reason! I actually got a pack of 4 for $17 if I am not mistaken. They came in a great shade of purple... at least they will be hidden  ::). They are nice simple mechanisms, I just don't trust the thin rod to hold the bay door if someone gives it a few good yanks. Figured if I welded a deadbolt to it and had it push that through problem solved. I need to revisit the locks and get them installed. Always try the easy way first and test it. Hopefully will have time to get to it soon.

Mine are black and am going to mount to inside of door so that the rods that come withit will push thru side of handle hole and handle to lock it when the handle is down.

Clifford if that was me it was RJ who did it (we don't do Fakebook). We are caravaning to the Washington Rally. only 160 miles yesterday left at the crack of noon. Stayed at Mountaingate RV park and heading up the highway to Deshutes Fairgrounds. Then into the rally on Wednesday.
On the road again!... ;D
