Title: Swaying bus
Post by: Beesme on August 24, 2016, 02:28:26 PM
I have new radius bushings new air bags and new shocks . Why does bus sometimes still wobble or sway from drivers side to passenger side at 60 mph .it scares me lol!!! I am at a loss of what to do... I'm even looking at a new bus.... Have eye on a country coach prevost and a Newell...

Oh just more info the bus seems better after suspension heats up ... It's generally first few miles then bus stiffens up.

Don't know about the wobble, and my prevost is pretty solid even in a good crosswind. The bags can't be fully aired it sounds like. What's you air pressure on gauges and any moisture in system? Water in the air lines and bags does funny stuff. Good luck.

120 psi no water in lines or tanks

If by "wobble" you mean the bus wanting to change lanes seemingly without turning the steering wheel you may have excessive toe out on the steer axle.

Check the caster setting on front axle. Negative caster makes steering easy at !ow speed, but causes wandering on highway with frequent correction of steering wheel. How are shocks? Any play in steering? Manual or power steering?

Your 06 NEEDS between 3.5 to 4 degrees of POSITIVE CASTER, its easy to do with a protractor and a couple of wrenchs.>>>Dan (I have found them as much as 3 DEGREES negative and they handled horribly)

A tandem tanker truck i use to drive was all over the road, like driving on marbles. Turns out it was the tires, 1 ply sidewalls. Empty it was good, loaded, hang on. New tires again( faulty tires were one week old) problem solved. Thicher sidewalls, old ones were paper thin. Just my two cents. Raymond

Not bus drives straight as an arrow. The bus itself like some one pushing on sides up and down

That was no the bus goes straight .it is the body that is moving up and down left and right like being pushed on by a giant lol

Mine does it too, to a small extent.  I put it down to there being air ride suspension that is lightly loaded (I an 5500 lbs under max weight rating) and all of the roll stiffness being in the rear air bags.  The front bags are cross-connected and only adjust height, not side to side.   I think it's just the nature of the beast.  I just ride with it.

Did you replace the front sway bar bushings? If you want the coach to stop this, assuming every thing else is ok, install a rear sway bar from a 4905. We did this on our 4104 and what a difference. You could probably get the parts from Luke if you can't get it locally.

I have basically the same suspension as you with sway bars in front and back. There is a bit of play from side to side and I get a bit of rocking at times, but nothing bothersome. The sway bars really come into play when going around a curve. I have gone a bit fast on some curves-enough for some stuff to come out of cabinets, yet the bus will not lean at all. Now you know the reason why most all buses have outside at the edge of the bus air bags. Good Luck, TomC

Check the radius bar bushing 's . ALL radius bar suspension's work the same way. Mis- installation can and normally will cause proposing  or wallowing...rdw

Don -

No front sway bar on a 4106, only a rear.  But a front bar off a 4905 will fit on an '06 with a little bracket fabrication.

Bruce -

What air pressure are you running in your tires?  Excess pressure can sometimes cause unusual behaviors.  Run your coach across a CAT scale in "ready to roll" condition (full tanks, groceries, clothes, etc.) to find out how much weight is being carried on each axle, then go to your tire manufacturer's website and find the inflation tables for the tire size on your coach.  On my coach, once weighed, I dropped the air pressure 15 psi/tire and the ride and handling changed quite a bit.  Much nicer ride being the major difference.

Totally agree with Dan about the front wheel caster and alignment settings.  Radial tires also require 0o to 1/8o toe-in per most manufacturers. . .

Finally, a "rock 'n roll" side-to-side ride is not uncommon in air suspended coaches, especially the earlier models where the air bellows are mounted inside the tires (like your 4106), as opposed to today's models, where the bellows are just behind the coach's outer skin.  Eagles, with their Torsilastic suspension, tend to "porpoise" with a gentle front-to-back motion, which can get really bad if the front shocks are shot.

FWIW & HTH. . .

I had the same rocking side to side motion on my 4106 when I purchased it.  The two rear height control valve links were egged out, causing it to flop to one side while the other side's air bag deflated, then it would flop to the deflated side..... over and over.

New delayed action valves and links solved the problem.

Also, ditto on positive caster.  4106 needs lot's of it especially if it has power steering.  The specs in the manual are for manual steering, not full power steering.

I talked with Luke he advised lowering coach position some , It helped tremendously ... I still have a lil but not nearly as bad . I will check back air valves and hardware also . Thanx for all the advice!

Dumb question... Is all the info you are giving for a 06 basically the same for an 07?  I have a 4107 and I'm just wondering.
Thanks
