The bad news is the transmission is toast. Presently in the shop in Houston, British Columbia. If any of our Canadian friends know of a HT 740 is a good known condition please have them contact me either email - n1xrb@aol.com pr by phone at two zero seven -512- 0175.
I have a lead on one but its in the the lower part of lower 48. Closer would be quicker.
Thanks
Bill
Timkar knows were one is at in BC or probably has one in his shop if all else fails Blake has a couple in PA and I have one in AZ
good luck
Remember that not just any 740 will work correctly behind a series 50, I would have one rebuilt for that engine

Why a series 50 is not going to damage a 740 maybe change the shift points which is no big deal.He had a HT 70 which is a 6 speed if it were me I would be looking for a B400 with 2 overdrives to help the series 50 out a little IMO he would be better off with the B400 than with a 1:1 final on the 740 behind his series 50
740 is pretty much a bolt in proposition. Any nicer transmission with electronics is a job I don't want to do this far north at the end of August.
Timkar needs to respond as he is in BC.
Bill
Change your heading to include the location BC Tim will answer
HT741 is the electronic version that will work with the Series 50. The B400 or B500 would be a better choice. Basically the same first 4 gears as the HT740, but with 2 overdrives (.74 and .64). Good Luck, TomC
Allison HT747 transmission and tranny portion of stone bennet shifter. Was removed from an MC9 with a 6V92.
Working fine when removed. Located in Cawston BC (1/2 hr from Canada/US border) Email sent with more pics.
Jason in PA has had one for sale off his 8v-71 engine he changed out. Its in the sale section of this board.

Just sent an email off to a guy that has an MC7 for sale in Houston. His is a 4 speed but maybe he will know if there is a 740 around close to you...Just heard back from fellow who lives up there and he doesn't know of any in the local area.
The 747 should work for him it's same as 740 with all the updates
We have done several 50 & 60 conversions, and agree the 740 is not the best choice, but often the easiest to install and operate, bulletproof and reliable, however I want the proper stall speed converter, and shift points. The 740 shifts hard, so you really want it set up properly. I don't have my notes, but I'm thinking it's a 1600-1700 rpm converter rather then a 2,000-2,100. Put the right set up in, and you'll be good for a long time. Put a tranny set up from a 2 cycle, and you'll make it home, but be pulling it again to make it righf
As long as the converter has a stall of around 1600, both an 8V-71 and the Series 50 have 2100rpm engine speed. With only 4 gears, the programming of either engine will work fine.
When I had my HT740 put into my truck, they used the soft shift option. It shifts from 1st converter to 2nd converter to 2nd lockup as normal, but when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd, the converter unlocks during the shift to make it smooth then relocks up when in gear. 3rd to 4th also does this. Good Luck, TomC
Just to show you, My V730 on partial pedal will upshift at 1600 and come down to 1100. Full pedal shifts occur at 1900-which I like, since I can always hold the transmission in with the shifter for higher RPM.
Looking at the options. Will keep the board informed of decision.
The electronic B5000 would be ideal with the overdrive. But at this time just not a feasible option.
The changes recommended ie shift points and torque converter, field work or Allision shop?

best done on a dyno..imo.
I am just saying if you can find a B4 or B500 at a buy you can program one to stand alone and deal with all the electronics when you return to the US
I thought the electronic transmissions were exactly that controlled electronically via the ATEC. Now I am confused.
Bill
The Allison world transmissions do not need a electronic engine to work,a fully installed touch pad with a harness are nice but 4 wires will make one work with toggles switches without all the features, they can program 1 to work as a 4,5 or 6 speed behind a mechanical engine
I have a 740 with 15k on it. It was built for my L10 at an Allison dealer. I have since changed to the 6 speed. I NW Pa also. Tom
Update.
!2 Sept
Transmission arrives tomorrow from the lower 48.
Shop is excellent. They have several real mechanics. Not just plug in the computer.
Pacific Truck and Equipment
Houston, BC
Visible from the highway, Hwy 16, due to the big Peterbilt sign. There is s Detroit Diesel shop across the street.
Thanks for all the suggestions and help. Much appreciated.

So a New World 6 speed can be set up to work behind a mechanical engine? Curious; will the tranny then shift normally up and down through all 6 or would the driver have to shift a lever or push a button? Modulation is the word I want.
When I had the 13spd Roadranger manual removed from my truck to put in an automatic, I wanted to use the 4000 (B500) series Allison with it's two overdrives. With my gearing (3.55 and 11R-24.5) that would give me 1354 in 5th at 65mph and 1441 in 6th at 80. But, the cost was virtually twice- about $23,000 compared to $12,000 for the HT740 and figured the 1/2-1mpg difference wouldn't be worth it.. With direct I can get a 1600 cruise at 57 (most economical rpm for my 3406B mechanical engine), or a comfortable 1800 cruise at 64. Good Luck, TomC
Tom,
Instead of running at 65-70 MPH we are going to be at 55-60 MPH. Since I rarely drive long days the time difference is minimal.
Thanks for the info.
Bill
Update!
Transmission spun for the first time this afternoon with gusto. Took the bus around the block. Shifted well up and down. Big road test tomorrow.
Thanks top all,
Bill
I did notice my 740 in slow traffic snaps in gear fwd and lower gear why would that be ? But at normal speeds runs awesome!
The 6 speed Allison 1000 in our 1947 Flxible is behind a non electronic engine. It was programmed as a 5 speed as we don't need the extra overdrive. About 7k miles on the conversion and it doesn't miss a beat. 60 mph is about 2300 rpm now. Travelled 625 miles in 1 day this summer. Only issue is a leaky selector shaft seal. Replaced it once but still leaks. Thinking the shaft may have gotten bumped at the salvage yard or on the pallet. Tom
Any electronic automatic can run behind an mechanical engine. All you need is a throttle position sensor that is calibrated for your transmission and everything works just fine. Good Luck, TomC
The 4000 RV series Allison are coming way down in price now too,the B500 probably will always be costly because it is manufactured for buses
Wondering if the new Eaton Procision auto trans is a threat to Allison.

Maybe for a pickup the torque rating is low it won't work in a bus,I heard it was a re labled Asian transmission
That new EATON PROCISION is available in the BLUEBIRD VISION and IC's conventional. I guess it doesn't have a torque converter so I wonder how it drives. Too small for the bigger buses but skoolies it should work ok.
It is a 2 clutch system
I knew that but I'm thinking how smooth it is compared to the forever legendary ALLISON.
60mph is 2300 rpm? Wow that's screamin. I just ran mine this week down the interstate and have no idea what my rpms were but I hit 80 accidentally a time or two with my 748. My tires are rated for 75mph. And taking a pic of your speedo while driving is incredibly dangerous even when there aren't any cars around, and running without clearance lamps is just plain wrong. So please chastise me. I deserve it. Ban me from the board. I deserve that too.

you'll break your speedo pegging it like that...
and i heard it can twist the tail shaft octagonal bearing off the transmission...good thing you let off the gas when you did... :)

Sorry, it will have to be someone else. I don't drive a Pray-voo!
Every Bus Conversion should go at least 80. Don't some Texas highways have higher speed limits? I wonder why big tires are speed rated slower? Are some special big tires rated much higher? Dunno.

Texas does and the buses run the 85 mph speed limit
Gas engine Scott with 6.17 gearing. Redline is 3600 rpm. Tom
Oh got it
