Do you guys think the Leviton duplex receptacles RO2-T5832-OBW with the USB chargers are worth the price or will they be out dated in the next few years.I was planning on using 4 or 5 through out the bus for Sonja's electronic gadgets but don't want to waste the time and money
Well, they would be a hip, modern and top class way to go for you first adopters on the technological edge. I would be more likely to just buy a couple of charge cubes that have the USB ports if I felt I needed more USB ports. How many devices do you have charging at one time?
On the other hand, it is a relatively inexpensive and easy project if it adds joy to your life.
Dammit Clifford - you're such a techno-geek. I'd never even seen those before - now I think we should have one in each room and a couple in the trailer.
Couple of 3 into 1 adapters with 120v charging USB's will do it. But then again, some would not like that look. The new outlets with USB, is just something more to go wrong-but looks good. Good Luck, TomC
I put one in behind the driver's seat a couple of years ago. Great thing. I should put more in. If they get obsolete in a few years, you just take them out and replace with the thing that is current then.
When my bus was converted in '89, they put in telephone outlets everywhere. There must be a dozen throughout the bus! One of these days I will take them out. But I will have to plug the holes with something nice, like oak to match...

Just install a bunch in Jacks old MCI for the youngins :) nice addition to keep up with the times, heck I don't even think tommy V. has those in his rig yet :o ;D

C'mon Bob your falling behind up there! ;)
I am going to install 4 even if the USB charging becomes obsolete in a few years the 115v receptacles never will
They do have phones now that you just set on top of a charger, don't even plug them in all Blue tooth. I put some in our Bus and the one we use the most are the two in the middle up front above my head. I plug in my phone to use the GPS speedo and the front travel Camera.

hi Clifford, they are a good in certain places, your tablets will mostly use them for years, Van, I have them on either side of the bed, passenger seat and in kitchen, especially useful for iPhone users, or phones you can't change a battery on, one less device (A.C. to USB ) qube to break or get lost, tom, lvmci...
Clifford,
I like the idea of those outlets with USB and am planning to install them throughout the bus and one in each bunk.
Picking up the bus (1985 Silver Eagle) a week from tomorrow!
Sounds like this would be a good all-purpose outlet to put in my bunk areas to keep the grand-kids happy with their devices. I guess the next thing is to have Wi-Fi in the Coach as well. I might have to take out the intercom telephones, which used to be cool.
The large USB plug has been around for 20 years, and there are probably 10 billion of them out there - it isn't going anywhere in a hurry. As a charger, about the only changes are the maximum power, it's up to 5 amps now I think. As a data interface it changes all the time, constant updates. If all the outlets do now is charge they will be good for probably decades.
Clifford: Check the charge current available at the USB jack. Most generic devices use 1 amp, some need 2 amps and some Apple items need 3 amps. I would look for 3 amp capability minimum to cover every type that might be plugged in. Gerry H
I wouldn't spend the extra money on them. There are many low cost options that will do the charging job, plus the trend is going to wireless everything including charging. The speed at which technology changes in electronics will probably make them obsolete in a couple of years, even though they are common now.
I found the duplex at Sams with 3.6 amps charging on the USB they weren't that bad in price even if the UBS goes away it is still a duplex ac plug,I just don't want wall chargers that plug in
Clifford do you have regular household receptacles in boxes? Lots of rv's and conversions use the quick cutin boxes that the wire just passes through and clamps in place.
I have regular boxes ,but you can buy the same in the cut in boxes I installed 1 in the Trek for her

One of the other things to consider, when selecting a charging source for your gadget, is how long you want your battery to last / life span. As mentioned some devices require larger power output usb power source in order to charge in a reasonable time. Charging the bigger hi current device on a smaller charger - no issue just takes longer. Do the reverse and its not so good on the battery and can lead to overheating and deterioration of the battery. Also many of the plugin chargers provided with your device have a custom tailored charging cycle / tickle to the current to prolong battery life. Just like the difference between charging conventional and deep cycle automotive battery's.
Another no no is to connect items to a charger when they don't need charged. It's easy to plug your phone in every night just to make sure its fully charged the next morning. But if it didn't need charged you are just shortening the battery life. My HP laptop is now going on 7 years old and is still on its original battery despite heavy use. But I never leave it plugged to the charger except to charge the battery. There are numerous articles on line related to do's and don'ts. Just like our big coach storage batteries, the little guys need proper care too. If you don't plan to keep a device longer than until the next better model comes out than do whatever. I usually end up keeping things longer so I take the high road on charging. Food for thought..... ;)
