Thinking I might coat my roof. I struggle with tiny leaks around my vents. It seems I have to caulk about once a year to keep up with the drying and peeling of the sealants. My seams are fine, and the roof is in good condition. But a nice white coating like they use on RVs seems appealing.
Any thoughts on a product like this? http://www.homedepot.com/p/Gardner-Sta-Kool-5-Gal-770-Cool-Roof-Elastomeric-Coating-SK-7705/100317815?cm_mmc=Shopping%7cTHD%7cG%7c0%7cG-BASE-PLA-D22-Roofing%7c&gclid=CPfaq-SL0M4CFQSTaQoddokJhw&gclsrc=aw.ds (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Gardner-Sta-Kool-5-Gal-770-Cool-Roof-Elastomeric-Coating-SK-7705/100317815?cm_mmc=Shopping%7cTHD%7cG%7c0%7cG-BASE-PLA-D22-Roofing%7c&gclid=CPfaq-SL0M4CFQSTaQoddokJhw&gclsrc=aw.ds)
I'm thinking it would make my roof white, like paint. It would seal everything, and keep it cool.
Thoughts?
I used a similar type product on both my buses. Just make sure you remove any silicone based sealant before hand, and it works really good at stopping those stubborn leaks, and helps reflect some of the heat from the sun.
I sealed my roof vents with outside, sun rated silicone and never had a problem-and that's 22 years ago. Good Luck, TomC
I have no idea what people charge but Jim is spraying the top of our DL with the smooth white bed liner when I can get it to him in Albuquerque.Maybe just buy a gallon of liner material and try it,a very good product and would last forever without any maintenance. This outfit handles all types of materials for RV roof patching and leaks they may can help you solve the problem www.bestmaterials.com (http://www.bestmaterials.com)
First thing you should do is to remove the vents, clean and scrape away all old caulk and the reapply a good quality caulk between vent and roof. Remove excess and smooth joint. Then you can coat the roof. If it was sealed properly in the first place, it shouldn't leak.
I assume a non-silicone calk is necessary???
Acrylic?
95% of leaks from any vent comes from the attching screws

This stuff sticks, stays, and is paintable. AND it can be close color matched.

I too am contemplating coating my alum roof on my Prevost .It is uncoated and has no leaks that have shown themselves as yet ,but I am concerned about chalking on the black paint on the sides of my coach .The back of my coach is probably 10 degrees cooler than the the front where there are so many windows.Would the coating make enough of a difference to be worth while??
If you are concerned about white streaks down the side, don't use the several brands of white roll-on RV roof coatings. Use a good urethane enamel in bright white., it will make a difference in the temperature of the roof, and it will last longer.
White roofs are for school buses. Take the time and do a good caulking job and paint the roof to match the bus color.

all the ones I ever saw were yellow....same color as the bus.
I used Henry's white elastomeric roof coating 12 years ago, it never did bleed white streaks and held up great. I just painted it again and used 2 gals. of Black Jack white elastomeric roof coating from Lowes, 3 coats and it covered great. It also provides a non slick surface to walk on if you ever need to go up top.
The 2 mil Prevost RV's have a white roof they just conceal it with flaring and it's only on the flat part of the roof they don't paint it down to drip rails.
I don't like the looks of a white roofing treatment or paint when it comes down to the drip line when the bus is a different color

Me either ;D
South Carolina has white roofs on some .North Carolina does not,I remember back when I was driving years ago ,and they painted my bus ,it came back with the widows the side view mirror and the tires all painted School bus Orange ! Yep in North Carolina they used to be orange ,not yellow .If we complained about the paint being where it wasn't supposed to be ,they would tell you quick"H--- Son ,it's a d----- school bus ,not a show car"!!!
Anybody try this company ? www.gaco.com (http://www.gaco.com) They have one they advertise as good for rv's 100% silicone.

Paul was that Henry's Sta-Cool 770 and how did you put it on roller or sprayer?
TIA Dave
Yes the first time I used Henry's Sta Cool. I used a 3/4" nap roller. Same procedure when I coated it with the Black Jack.
