Title: Adding a Davco 382
Post by: DEMOMAN on July 05, 2016, 01:00:36 PM
Hello All,

I have an 78 TMC/ MCI 8 with an 871 NA.  I have the two stock fuel filters in it.  I purchased a Davco 382 because it will separate water from the fuel.  I dropped a couple injectors when I first purchased the bus so this was likely the culprit. I was planning to put this in line before my first filter as added protection but a friend told me to simply replace the first filter completely.  Are there any problems with running all three together?

It would be simpler to just have the Davco, you will be able to drain water off it, see how the filter is doing, and be able to prime the system by pouring fuel on the top. I have had one on my 8V71 since 1996 with no problems, and the filter element is cheaper than the spin-on's. No real need to have both.

If you go on their web site you will see they recommend only the Davco filter. Do away with the other two. Put a priming pump in the line while you are at it so if you run out of fuel it is simple to prime things.

Davco says" it can be used as the only filter" but check your engine manufacture, the 2 strokes are not a common rail engine and most use a secondary filter with the Davco so do some 60 series.I would keep my secondary filter, and the Davco can be a PITA when they start going bad and they do bad I have 5 Davco 382 that need rebuilding now when I can find the parts with out needing to sale the farm to pay for the parts. You need to pay close attention to the micron rating on replacement filters for Davco DD want a 7 micron and a 7 micron filter plugs in a hurry with water in the fuel the 50 micron filter will pass about anything

I replaced both filters on my 6V92. Just run the Davco. As Cliff said, it's a split rail system, so you either need to leave the secondary filter, or fabricate a Tee.

I think the filters I use are 10 micron. I change it about once a year.

For an 8-71 the stock filters are sufficient, just get primary element with a drain petcock. Since the feds required replacement of all underground fuel tanks, shouldn't be a problem like 30 years ago.Course if you get fuel from somewhere else then you may have issues. The trouble with these special filters isn't that they don't work, it's down the road when seals and parts in them go bad and either they are discontinued, expensive to repair, or are hard to locate repair parts out on the road. Have seen this on similar units that aren't around anymore. Better money would be spent on an air dryer.

Davco is a good system but I tell people just keep your 2 filters they have worked for 75+ years, you can buy spin on filters with a petcock to drain the water if that is what you want

AIR dryers are over rated too..

tank drain cords are not...
