Title: Tips for removing windshield weatherstripping ok MC-9?
Post by: Scott & Heather on June 08, 2016, 03:44:25 AM
MCI looked at photos of my 9 windshield and quoted me $1300 to rr. Mainly because of their perceived labor for removing smeared sealant and old fencing. They said if I do that part it would help lower the cost a lot. I've sold the coach but promised the new owners a new windshield. At this point more $ out for our 9 is thrown to the wind, so I'll be removing the goo and fencing myself basically in their parking lot. Any tricks to it? Can I slice the old fencing with a razor? Won't hurt anything right? Have you tried peeling the caulk off the rubber? It usually just peels away.

Also, are they replacing the rubber gasket? If so, I don't understand the issue. Just remove the spline. It will pull right out of the slot. Use a pick if necessary.
You should replace it any time you replace the windshield anyway as they crack and leak and then you need to spear some caulking on it to seal it up.

Speaking of which, I need to go seal mine!

That sounds high, last one I had put in the Eagle cost about $360.00.  Did you check with coach glass?

Another thing to watch out for is not using any metal tools near the edge of the glass. One small chip of the edge can lead to an immediate crack that will spread up the glass.

Just go inside take your feet start on the curved side and push the windshield out and be done with it

Yeah, Scott didn't mention the cause (cracked, chipped, discolored, delaminated windshield???) but if it needs to be replaced, the windshield is probably dead anyway.  Kick it out and don't worry about it.

Speaking of price, have you checked the price at Mobile RV Glass?  They are a nationwide service that will come to your home and replace your glass.  If you subscribe to Bus Conversion Magazine, which I heard is a pretty good read, there is a $100 off coupon in there for them.  Call them at 855 778 4527 or check them out at www.MobileRVGlass.com (http://www.mobilervglass.com).

The photo shows cracks and fogging in the driver's side. I'm guessing that's the reason. I don't see why it's a big deal for them. $400 including a new gasket and you're done.

Seems like it is worth finding out now before you really need it.  Do you have any rocks laying around.  :D

Yep glass is cracked badly. I don't see the big deal either. They are saying 8 hours labor at MCI in Illinois because of the rr of the fencing. Seems ridiculous to me.

WHAT???   There are the locking strips in the front face of the gaskets.  You stick a small flat blade screwdriver (or a proper plastic glass tool but - in this case, who care???) under it and pull it out.  At that stage, you don't have to kick it out, you can push it out with your elbow.  If for some reason, it seems too sticky, you can take a razor knife and run it around the cavity that the locking strip came out of (aim for the corner of the cavity closest to the glass if you have to do this.  The glass will almost fall out.  Dunno if it's worth the time/cost/effort in this case, but the glazier's suction cups are a Godsend on a job like this but really all you need to do is to pull the glass out by hand.

TIME:
5 mins - Standing there looking at it, just to be sure ... (or in my case, trying to figger out what's going on and trying to look like I know what I'm doing)
5 mins - Pulling out locking strip
5 mins - Razor knifing the gasket (optional)
10 mins - Rocking the glass, squirting a little dishwashing soap solution in the gap, pushing out a corner, getting a grip on it, and pulling the windshield out
10 mins - Cleaning up the sealant and dirt that was caught under the gasket so that the new gasket will seat cleanly on the edge.

Honestly, if it takes you half an hour to do it, including the cleaning, you're being way too careful.  I helped a guy do a broken "Nova" transit windshield last fall.  Think full one-piece panaramic, about the size of a sheet of plywood.  We had suction cups and the plastic tools.  Including being careful with the gasket so we could reuse it, cleaning the groove in the gasket, actually installing the windshield (BTW, there AIN'T enough money to get me on that job again) pulling and replacing the sealing strips, etc.  It was a little over an hour.  And there was a fair amount of "I'm looking like I know what I'm doing time" in that, too.
Yeah, call your insurance agent and get a recommendation for a coach/truck glass installer or check out one of the companies listed in the other comments.  They wanna hose you on this one, Scott.

Sorry, I transposed the last two digits in the phone number for Mobile RV Glass above.  It has now been fixed.  Thanks for pointing that out Scott.  Try it now.

Bring it to MN. C&J can probably do it in under an hour.

I guess I don't fully understand what you mean when you say, "fence".  If you are referring to the rubber gasket that holds it in place, there is no RR.  There is remove the old and install the new one. Period.

Craig yes, correct. Just remove replace. Fencing is the MCI term but yes just the rubber weatherstripping

Dang Scott - Id just replace the window myself or hire any self employed auto window installer to give you a hand.  You could pay them 400$ and they wouldnt care how long it took to replace.  Thats a days wage to them.
