Title: Genny fuel return
Post by: somewhereinusa on May 23, 2016, 03:17:50 PM
Does anyone know if I can T into the fuel return line of a 3116 Cat for fuel return for my Genny?

I wouldn't the larger Cat engine probably returns more fuel with more pressure than a generator engine just guessing without any data to read

I would tend to agree with Cliff on this. Run a separate line back to the tank.

I have increased the hose size from where I installed the tee to the tank and got away with on a 8v92

When I first got my bus (transit) I emptied the fuel tank and dropped it down. Fairly easy. Much to my amazement, there were two 5 bolt access plates on the top of the tank. One I used a standard 5 bolt sending unit to add the fuel gauge. And the second I drilled to holes and made a pickup and return for the generator separate from the big engine. As with the cooling system, all systems on the generator should be separate from the main engine for the most reliable service. Good Luck, TomC

Keep the fuel supply and return separate, and keep the fuel pickup tube for the generator at a higher level if it is in the main tank so that the generator will not use up all of the fuel if you get in a pinch.

Thanks guys, I poured some diesel down the return line and it just went away quite quickly.  I did forget to mention one important part, my genny produces 12V so I can't think of any scenario where the engine and genny would be running at the same time.

My three roof airs are the only air conditioning I have. Hence I run the generator going down the road. Two roof airs are usually enough to keep it cool inside. But then again, my bus is 12v (and so is my truck). Good Luck, TomC
