I have a genuine Detroit 6v92 in frame kit, cam, cylinders, liners, etc. still in boxes and I'm tying to figure out whether to sell it or keep it for my 8v92. I can't seem to find a way to buy two more Genuine Detroit cylinder kits and I'm guessing the cam I have isn't transferable to an 8v92. Since we've sold our MCI 9, I won't have a 6v92 to worry about. Should I sell the kit and save the money towards an 8v92 in frame or what? If I were your kid, what advice would you give me? New owners of the 9 most likely are not interested in the kit. Please share some advice.

I can get you 2 liners kits from DD or you could donate those to me and I could build RJ a turbo 6v92TA ;D.If you take care of the 8v92 you will never need the kits,shoot me a price and numbers from the kits and cams
If I was your father, I would reccomend that you leave them with me.
But really - I dont think we are going to put enough miles on this beast to need an inframe in the next 15 years.
I'd sell it off if you are going to be fulltiming and your current engine doesnt need it.
But you know what always happens a week after you sell something you dont need....

Stay away from Interstate and the old 6v92 will last a long time without a rebuild ;D

How does an in-frame re-build compare to out of frame?
If all goes according to plan I will be driving up to my grandfather's in Oregon with the bus next summer to work on/rebuild the engine. I assume it is harder doing an in-frame rebuild minus the fact that you don't have to remove the engine; are there any other major differences?
If you do consider selling your kit please let me know the price as well.
It will be exciting to start seeing some pictures of the new build!
A inframe is just to get a few more miles from the engine a old 2 stroke will handle just so many inframe jobs then it is down to completely dissembling the engine where you can change all the end gaskets replacing gears and bearings on the gear train check the line bore,crankshaft and replace the cams and bearing, a huge difference in price too !!!!!
With so many military vehicles being made around various engines, MTU is still making the 6V-53Ti, 8V-71TA, 8V-92TA. If you watch the government auctions, you can get brand new engines, or factory rebuilt engines in their cases still. As to the 6V-92TA rebuild kit, sell it. If you keep up the 8V-92TA, you'll probably never have to rebuild it in your life time (unless something breaks).
On my first truck with 8V-92TA, the first in frame rebuild came at 500,000mi. While I could have just done a ring job on it (there was minimal liner wear), I wanted the updated pistons and liners. Because of that, my oil consumption went from a gallon of oil every 1,200 miles to nearly double at 2,200 miles for a gallon of oil. Good Luck, TomC

Ok I'll get the numbers off the boxes and come up with a fair number and see if someone wants to get it out of my luggage bays. Cliff and Bjorn I'll send you PM's. I agree with TomC I see 8v92 TA's show up on eBay even in pretty nice condition fairly cheap. If I ever blow mine, I'd rather find a matching engine and slide the old one out and slide the new one in.
