Title: DL3 conversion project, fast track.
Post by: thomasinnv on April 18, 2016, 07:13:17 PM
Brought her home on Wednesday April 13 and started ripping it apart the next day. Had it mostly stripped and ready for fabrication in two days. Left side completely framed for new windows and skinned, started welding on the right side.

More progress. Got the wheelchair door removed and ready to start welding in framework to close the hole.
(https://busconversionmagazine.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160419%2F8aa7316f8a914b1e74fb3e371942d526.jpg&hash=4235a541f288c80115a8d288f658e16441accc9c)
Also disabled all the lift controls and ready to yank the lift out. Anyone know where I can get a smooth side bay door to replace the lift access door?

Wouldn't it be easier to get the big stuff inside before you close up the hole. Why fight getting the mattress and frige in the front door. I was contemplating getting one of those just because I figured the door would come in handy for just that part of it. Nice bus. Have fun. It's fun being in a bus that your other bus could fit inside of. Isn't it.

Out of curiosity, what type of welder are you using? If you are using a generator to use it what model/wattage generator?
Title: Re:
Post by: thomasinnv on April 20, 2016, 12:34:30 AM
jav9956 I use the little generator for the power tools.  I have a bigger generator for the welder. Scott, I am parked at my house, and yes it is in the middle of the dessert. Our power is solar and generator, and we haul in our water. We really don't mind, we are not here much anyway. Usually just a few weeks in the spring on our way north, then a few weeks in the fall on our way south.

I sent you a PM, just hoping to find out a little more specific information on the set-up because I need to do something similar now to keep my project moving along. If you have the time it would help a ton to learn a little from your experience.

Thank you, awesome bus by the way!

All the new steel is in place, all the new skin is on, contacted a body and paint guy i know and hes gonna come look at it and get ready for paint. Floor is going down tomorrow and then I will get started on interior wall layout. Boy oh boy removing the handicap lift controls and the door and framing it in was more difficult than removing the old bathroom. I always thought the bathroom was the worst part of the whole job, not anymore.

(https://busconversionmagazine.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160421%2F3fe0b5a393b90f57358f13f690d42673.jpg&hash=d80e11b39d2086811fa958fc23c34c83c6df4666)

I wanted to keep the smooth side appearance and not bugger it up with rivets in the new skin, so after much research I decided to go with sika flex, which seemed to be the product of choice by many converters. I ran short and the box store here didn't have anymore so I tried another product by loktite called 'ultimate' something or other. Zero hold time, meaning it grabs instantly no bracing required. After using it on a few panels i discovered it beats sika flex hands down. The sika flex just pales in comparison, even after 24 hours I found i had to add bracing in a few places with the sika flex. The loktite stuff just grabbed and wouldn't let go. Wish I'd used it from the beginning.

Can you post exactly what you're using for adhesive? Loctite?? Ultimate?

Never mind I found it.

Doesn't sika make a power grab too?

Thats what i started out using was the sika power bond or power grab or something like that.

Got the floor down today. Gonna hang the reflectix and start framing out walls tomorrow. It will be nice to start seeing some progress,  and start seeing something take shape inside.

Got all the interior walls framed up. Decided to go with a side bathroom instead of a walk through like in the 8, seems I'm always waiting for someone to get out of the bathroom so I can get to the bedroom, not gonna happen any more. I'll try to remember some pictures tomorrow.

2" r-max thermasheath 3 with a r value of 13.1, with a layer of double sided reflectix over that, and 3/4 fir strips for the required air space for a total r value of over 20 for the whole assembly.

Made a little more progress today. Got some of the reflectix up with fur strips, and built one set of bunks.

A guy i know that does body and paint came by today to look at doing a paint job on the bus, quoted me 3800 to paint all the new skin. That sound fair? I know there is a lot of prep work involved with the bare aluminun and they have to use the zink oxide base coat. Seems a little high to me but I don't know. The guy is a friend of mine and I would hope he wouldn't rip me off, but sometimes  being a friend costs you in the end.

That's a fair price for paint. Materials alone will run upwards of $1100 for BC/CC

Second that, and proper prep of the bare aluminum is critical.

Got the other set of bunks built today, yeah thats 4 bunks total. Got some more of the reflectix hung on the walls, and gar all the 12 volt wired for the rear half of the coach. I'll most likely be cutting the holes in the roof for some of the ac's and fantastic fans tomorrow. Progress seems to have slowed a bit, lots to do.

Been making progress, slow but sure. Doing cedar t&g and all those precision cuts take a lot of time.

2 months ago I ordered a motion window for the entry door of the MC8 and it came in yesterday. So if anyone is interested i have a brand new still in the crate never installed  motion window slider with screen for an MC8 available for your pleasure! Make me an offer.

It is not the same size as the DL3 or I would keep it, as for the size of earlier 102 models i have no clue. You can call peninsula and ask them if it will fit your bus.

Actually it is cedar. I did however use knotty pine on the MC8 when I converted it, but I am going to much greater lengths with this one concerning insulation, vapor barrier and thermal separation, and a lot more detailed finish work. Lots of sawdust lol.

Nope no one riding my tail but me. My wife is a trooper though, she jumps right in and tackles anything I need help with. She's not afraid to get her hands dirty. She doesn't like heights but she didn't hesitate to jump on the roof and manhandle air conditioners.

Actually I would like to meet you guys sometime. We have similar vocations and it's always nice to be able to fellowship with other believers. It can get pretty lonely on the mission field, especially in tent ministry. Good fellowship is sometimes hard to come by.

I tell you what Scott, I am starting to feel it. It's been sun up to sun down for a month now, and I will be pushing myself pretty hard to meet my end of the month deadline. Now that the paint is done I can put the windows in,  which means a ton more trim to do. I'm almost done with the cabinets, but I still have almost all of the plumbing left to do.

I haven't been on here in a while and was just looking through what you've done. Impressive how much you've gotten done and how good it looks. I guess it helps having done a previous bus and knowing what works and what you want. Good on you, Craig

He said right at half a gallon per side

Thanks, they did not waste very much paint, that is good coverage considering they are painting from top to bottom with no stainless siding.

He just painted from the upper belt line up, just where I installed new skins. The rest of the bus was painted a year ago so it still looks like new paint.

Got the tile laid in the kitchen and bathroom yesterday. Gonna grout and trim the edge of the counters today and hopefully get all the appliances and sinks installed.

hi Derrick, seems like you split the kitchen and living room up front. my 5A had a front kitchen, a center living room, with a hatch inside to the front bay, when it came time for the 102C3, my wife wanted a middle kitchen, I liked the front kitchen, tom, lvmci...

Remarkable.

A friend of mine a few years ago converted a bus over the winter, just working evenings and week-ends. Cost him his girl friend though... she never saw him that winter.

I literally melt into my lazyboy in the evening and my wife has to wake me up to go to bed lol. I almost always beat the sun up in the morning, but it takes me a few minutes to get going. I cannot stop and rest much during the day, more than 5 minutes sitting down and I am sawing logs. When we get back on the road i may just go park in the mountains and sleep for 3 days straight.

Spent the last 2 nights in the bus, no issues and everything works flawlessly. We will be hitting the road Tuesday morning just as the sun says good morning. I am probably 95% complete, just lacking a few details and fine tuning. Need to finish out the steps, build some night stands, install a few cabinet door latches and other things like that. These things will have to wait because we have revival dates set and we gotta get there.

Well we have been in the bus and on the road for a few weeks now with no issues and momma is happy with the new rolling home. I dug into the rear high-rise system and got it working again, a simple wiring correction. I also investigated into the self steering of the tag axle, $600 of parts on the way and all should be well again. Will be nice to get it working again. I have a little  rocker cover leak that popped up, boy is Detroit proud of those gaskets. I would have just ordered them through ebay and saved $70 but when you're travelling it's nice to be able to walk in to the counter and walk out with your necessary parts and roll on down the highway. She runs awesome and the 60 series really does flatten out them hills. What a joy to drive compared to the old MC8. Which by the way will be available for sale when I get back in the fall.

Hi-rise is the opposite of kneeling, for the rear of the coach.

Raises the back side to improve clearance.

The 45 footers love dragging their asses on the ground entering/exiting driveways that aren't flat.

A busnut will definitely want that working, and understand when to use it!

happy coaching!

Cliff, a little fyi...if the high rise is active when you flip the manual tag lock switch it also disables the auto lowering function. Both systems are connected to the speed switch.

Mine is interlocked into the kneeling some way I have to figure the deal out they are both at the same place at the entrance door and the tag lock is on the dash .Right now I am trying to figure out how you remove the Webasto they have mounted in the engine compartment to the floor as I don't need it with the Oasis heating
Title: Re:
Post by: thomasinnv on June 16, 2016, 11:13:38 AM
Should be mounted to a bracket, if you still have the access from the inside it would be much easier to get to. Factory has an access panel over the webasto. I need a fuel pump for mine. Gonna sell yours?
Title: Re:
Post by: thomasinnv on June 16, 2016, 11:18:51 AM
The kneeling system should not be interconnected to the tag systems, at least not from factory. What year is your DL3? The earlier year high rise systems were not connected to the speed switch. I can't remember the cutoff but I think it was around '95 or '96. If you remove the kneeling system like i did there are some airlines you will have to reroute around the relay valve above the front axle and a few others that connect to the controls and the supply tank.

Post by: luvrbus on June 16, 2016, 11:50:03 AM
i am keeping the kneeling system because I don't want a step hanging under the door and they are good to help with leveling, then I may not need it when I get my HWH system installed

Been working on the steerable tag system. I have it mostly back together but still have a few issues to work out. I have installed the lock cylinder and all the reed switches, reconnected all the airlines to the appropriate locations, and tested everything out. The locking function operates as it should, but I still have some work to do on the latching mechanism. One set of roller guides and the retracting pin is completely gone, and the tongue plate is bent out of shape pretty bad. The lower roller guides are in pretty bad shape. More parts on the way from MCI. Still having a problem with the speed switch but I think I have it narrowed down to either the speed sensor or an atec problem. For now i have bypassed the speed switch and just leave the system disabled. Much fun.

Title: Re:

A little info on this Clifford (or anyone else that might have some insight)...

I was having an issue with the speed switch not functioning. With engine running and parked I was not getting 24v at the nc terminal so i replaced the speed switch with a new overstock item from a bus parts supplier. Same problem. I am seeing 24v at the sensor terminal. Not sure how this is supposed to work but it seems odd to me, I would think that the sensor would send a pulse of some kind, or variable resistance or variable voltage, not a constant voltage. I removed the sensor wire and verified that the 24v is being fed from the sensor wire and not backfeeding through the speed switch. So i am thinking that the problem is some where between the trans sensor and the speed switch. The sensor wire comes directly from the trans control module so i would assume either a bad sensor, or less likely a problem with the control module. I would think that if there was a problem with the speed sensor that i would get a code from the trans? There are no codes and there are no other issues with the trans, everything seems to work as it should aside from the speed switch circuit. I'm at a loss here. I can manually energize the steering systems (lock and latching both) and everything works as it should. Any thoughts? I'm thinking 35.00 for a speed sensor is pretty cheap troubleshooting. The thing that concerns me is the 24v coming from the control module, seems odd but what do I know.
Title: Re:
Post by: thomasinnv on July 08, 2016, 01:11:27 PM
Made a few repairs over the last few weeks. Replaced valve cover gasket and isolators to stop leaking valve cover. Still have a very small leak, I think it's the pan gasket. The isolators are blown out pretty bad so a new set of isolators would probably stop the leak. Several hundred miles driven and very little oil on the back of the rig. Almost negligible. Certainly not like the old 2 stroke.

Finally got the rest of the new parts installed for the self steering tag. Had to do some welding on the horn, there were no wear plates installed and the steel was badly worn from the latch mechanism. Filled in the worn spots and installed all new wear plates, new latch arm and both sets of rollers. Everything works as it should now. Clifford you were not exaggerating one bit. It makes a huge difference in the turning radius and yes you really do need to watch the tail swing.
