Title: Gold Beach to Roseburg
Post by: Lee Bradley on April 08, 2016, 10:11:37 AM
A little input please on routes from GB to Roseburg OR. I am looking at south and north on Redwood Highway US 199 or north and east on Highway 42.

!99 is more of a straight shot and 42 is windy and has had some landslides lately here and there. Either way you will back track a little but not bad. HTH Dave5Cs

    Hi;
        Been a few years since I was thru that area,  but as I recall
        US 199 is a nice road.  I would go that way again.

No backtracking on Gold Beach to Coos Bay and straight on over to Roseburg on 42.  Besides, that way you eliminate 3 hills going north on I-5.  Nothing wrong with 42 I would prefer that way IMO.

Thanks Boomer.  I was leaning that way.  I wont be through Vancouver on the way down, going down the coast, but I am coming back up I-5 hitting McMenamins for passport stamps.  Maybe we could get a visit in in Vancouver.

Mark how steep are those hills (Grapevine steep and long rise or Sierra steep?)and is there a better way IYO to get to the September rally in Washington than coming up I-5 from Sacramento?
TIA

Dave, Sexton Mt., Stage Road and Canyon Creek are all as steep as the Wheeler Ridge but not as long.  To get to the rally at Stevenson, WA in the Gorge take 97 north at Mt Shasta.  Stay on it all the way to I-84 at the Columbia River (Biggs Jct).  Then go west on I84 to The Dalles and cross the river into WA on 197. Then take 14 west to Stevenson.  Don't pay any attention to the signs on 14 that say low clearance.  You go through 5 tunnels but they are all well over 14'.  The low clearance is at the curb, plenty of room.

Thanks Mark. Great way to go. Never even thought of going that way. Probably a much nicer view also. ;D
