Title: Dash/rear/other cam system with many cameras?
Post by: sparr on March 28, 2016, 12:56:58 PM
one-camera dashcams are plentiful. two-camera systems are pretty common as well. A very few people on car modder forums have four-cam systems hacked together.

I want at least 9 cameras. Some recording full-time, some just selectable for a monitor (such as a bumpercam for parking). Are there any solutions out there other than putting together something myself with an embedded computer and a bunch of ip cams and some commercial non-vehicle security camera software?

If you go wireless. Multiple transmitters interfere with each other. I put one on each side of the rear on my bus and thought wireless would work. Guess what, I bought 2 25 foot rca cables, cut the connectors off one end of each cable. I then cut the elbow off the forward end of the heater pipe with my mini tubing cutter. It's only 5/8 at that end. It's 1-1/4 at the rear.  I had a spool of 14 gauge solid wire and pushed it to the front. Make sure you keep the wire as straight as possible or it won't feed through. I also bent the end over about an inch.   pulled 1 from the front to my forward luggage compartment where the pipe goes to the coach heater core. I then spliced the rca cables there and attached my fish to the connectors and pulled the rest to the back. I bought the cables from the car radio department at Walmart it's clear and has individual insulated wires that are easy to splice and I got the small yellow phone wire connectors from radio shack. I just haven't quit decided where to put the monitors
Yet but works well. They even have night vision and great for checking the tires on the toad. 50 feet is just enough to get it in the cab unless you make an extra hole for it. Think I may run 2 10 gauge wire through there for my battery bank. There plenty of room there and they are out of the way there.

Have you considered something like this http://www.costco.com/AvertX-16-Channel-HD-IP-NVR-with-6TB-HDD%2c-4-4MP-Cameras%2c-4-Autofocus-4MP-Cameras-with-100'-Night-Vision.product.100221886.html (http://www.costco.com/AvertX-16-Channel-HD-IP-NVR-with-6TB-HDD%2c-4-4MP-Cameras%2c-4-Autofocus-4MP-Cameras-with-100'-Night-Vision.product.100221886.html)

Maybe the price will come down?  Kinda like what we would like.  Hopefully the big cameras can be made smaller?

That would work, assuming its power draw is relatively low, but it's way overkill in terms of camera quality and recording hardware. I think I'm going to end up with a raspberry pi and a 128GB microSD card.

and use USB cameras?
Can you outline exactly how you're going to set this up with the raspberry? I'm really curious? I am interested in building a similar system.

I was thinking of IP cameras with a low power ethernet network between the cameras and the rpi[2].

This is for your bus conversion? I would find a couple of forums that deal with security cameras, wireless and fixed or mobile. That is where I found my info. My unit is not wireless, but it is infrared, color, and can use up to three cameras. It works well on my pickup for hauling and  backing and connecting hitch. I've had it about 2 years and quite happy with it for this application. It also enabled me to become familiar with these systems before I change the one in the coach. Its about 15 years old and infrared b&W with a bulky monitor on dash. Does work good at night when backing up though. Some forum posts indicated poor signal on wireless units over a certain distance on some systems, so I would make sure to check this issue out on any system you consider. Many systems are listed on Amazon and the reviews can be very helpful.
