I'm considering getting a dash cam for our summer adventure trip. Are there any recommendations anyone would have?
I found this one @ Amazon and it sounds good. Thoughts?

We have the Cobra drive Hd CDR840 1080FHD Dash Cam.
Works well and wide angle with 20 minute loop as well as freeze button and auto on in an accident with battery take over.
It can stick well to any window or dash etc and moved to any vehicle your want to use. ;D

Can you get more than a 20 minute loop out of it?
Can you link it up to a real time wireless transmission to another memory source that is secure? Something other than the memory inside the actual camera?
You basically hit the save button and it starts another file. It comes with cords to hookup to computer, cig lighter 12vdc or it will run on its own battery. I have a 110 outlet that has the USB ports on the front upper wall of bus and hook it to that.

I was looking for a dash cam last year at the Louisville truck show. Had no idea what to buy until I stumbled onto dash cam apps for smart phones. I installed daily roads voyager (free) on an old smart phone and bought a suction mount off Ebay for the phone. Drove to Disney last year from Ohio with the cam running. I did buy a larger memory card for the video to store on. Seemed to work well, records your speed and gps location. Will auto save the video if it senses a collision. Only negative was that phone has to be plugged in as it will eat a battery in a hurry. Another app I tried was Roadrunner dash cam.
How big a memory card for all that video? Or did it only record at various times?I'd think 20 plus worth of video would eat a lot of memory.
There are many choices out there for these cameras, and a lot of them are made in China. I would look at reviews at places like Amazon where people who actually bought them give their impressions and experiences. The prices for these have come down over the years, and they even have multi-camera systems that give a 360 degree view. Recording accidents is a double edged sword, it might back up your version of events, it might prove your guilt. Lawyers know to ask for cell phone records and video recordings now, whether you like it or not.
Lawyers may ask but if it's erased it doesn't exist. If it doesn't help you why have it????
Chessie, It only saved a certain amount of video and constantly over wrote the video unless it sensed an impact. It sensed impacts when hitting severe bumps in the road. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dailyroads.v&hl=en

Lawyers do not ask politely, they subpoena. If there was a serious accident with injuries and the recording disappeared, your chances of being believed go down. The more serious the accident, the more they will dig. It is a good question, why have it if it does not help you? Depending on the circumstances, the police could confiscate the vehicle and examine it in detail for any deficiencies that led to the accident, and, by the way, examine any "black box" info, cell phone data, and recording devices including those on buildings in the area. Things are more complicated nowadays.
Thus my thinking, (difficult!) and question regarding real time remote data streaming to a secure additional physical site? Then if not needed, it just dumps every so often?
The point being there would be a valuable separate data preservation in event of law enforcement or others simply removing and keeping the camera. Paranoia? Dunno.
This would also be invaluable for home or business video camera. Just bashing the cameras or later stealing them physically would not work. Nor keeping the drives.
It is a difficult situation when you think of all the possible circumstances, but it also points out the important need of having good insurance coverage. On the bright side, maybe the cameras can capture events not involving legal liability that can be used on one of those TruTV programs where videos of bizarre events are shown.

What would be very nice but hardly practical would be a integrated multi camera system that gave the time, date, direction in magnetic compass headings, speed, temperature, breaking force (deceleration ... or acceleration) in fractional or whole gees and lots of other timely perhaps needful stuff.
Also automatic night vision for low light situations. Also perhaps thermal. Live real time complete. Automatic tamper proof real time automatic wireless transfer to a secure remote site. Might be a start up growth industry, particularly when insurance companies understand the advantages.
Some of this stuff already exists but putting it all together and marketing it would be the challenge. Anyhow, just some outside the box thinking.

I have this unit in my car. It saves 1080p video in 1 to 20 minute clips. Default is 3 minute clips. With a 4GB SD card, the unit will save 2 hours of video, always rewriting over the oldest clip.
The video quality is very good. I don't recommend going in and changing the factory default settings. I did when I first got it and it didn't seem to like it. After resetting back to factory, it's been good.
Garmin makes a nice large screen GPS with a dash cam built in. A lot of options on the setup too

Thanks for the input. I was hoping someone had the unit and could comment on it directly. 2 hours on a 4gb card would equate to around 32 hours on a 64gb card. Don't remember if it accepts that big of a card though ... Will have to look.
Brian I bought the same one on Ebay for 69.00 US or for me 100.00 Canadian. It came from China and had free shipping and it came in the mail and I didn't have to pay any duty charges. I have just used it once and don't you know I followed a drunk guy (I thought) for 50 kilometers swerving all over the road and I called 911. The guy finally went 100 feet off the road and didn't roll it. It turns out he had a medical condition of some kind, but who gives these guys a licence. The only reason I caught up to him at one point was because he hit a van in a 80 kilometer zone. I only used it once and I want to put it in my 4 runner, motorcycle or my bus so I used velcro so I can move it. It does have a small memory card and the video was very good. It also has a gps but I didn't hook that up yet. Hope that helps.

32GB max if I recall.
Ours is 32 GB max,my wife is into all the gadgets of all things that is what she wanted for Christmas I think it's more distraction myself. Her reasoning is you have a record if somebody causes you to a accident which is true, like I told her yea you have record if you cause a accident too.
I lost the battle anyway ;D but I could do without one to answer the question Brian that is the one we have good or bad I have nothing to compare it with I only know it has very short battery life when not plugged in.
The grand kids hooked hers up through the overhead TV someway I like that she can sit or lay on couch and watch it
