Title: Shifter Tower MCI
Post by: captain ron on January 14, 2007, 05:29:32 PM
What is inside the tower that the emergency brake and shifter is connected to?  I want to do something with it as far as making it more attractive and don't want to run screws into it if theres wiring or airlines inside of it

Hello Capt'n

Unless you have unconventional options, 2 air lines, one up and one down from the brake valve, the cable from the shift mechanism heads through the floor under the tower and somewhere up inside the tower a wire for the light that should illuminate the shifter when the lights are on.

Do you mean the driver's modesty panel beside the aisle that these are mounted to/behind?

happy coaching!

There's no light above shifter, the light is in the shifter. I'm talking about the thing to the right of the driver, there's a rail on top of it also.

Hello Capt'n.

The modesty panel may be removed, and has been from many conversions, you just need to mount the brake valve on the shift tower, or some have moved it to the left side of the driver by extending the air lines from beneath the floor.

Opens up the front stairway quite nicely. The new coaches have moved everything to the left side and the driver's seat is right next to the aisle, no panel any more.

happy coaching!

If my seat swiveled I would remove the panel. I just looked at it better and see why you call it a modesty panel as the shifter has it's own tower and mount. I thought I'd put a hinged top on it that would fold open to twice as wide and make a little table with a drink holder in it for while driving.

Captain Ron,

My MCI-9 still has the panel to the right of the driver seat.  Still has the rail across the top.  I have a table that stores behind the driver seat, and attaches to the rail on top of the panel.  Works really well, however, it's not something that could be installed while driving.
