Full disclosure: I think I burned up my engine block heater when I switched it on before starting and left it on after draining, flushing and refilling cooling system. Question: Heater is screwed into block behind the fuel pump. Any ideas on thread size and type? Any other advice on removing fuel pump? Is there another location / method that would eliminate removing pump or draining antifreeze?I looks like there is a standard block heater specific to 671 without A/C compressor. Is that what I need?
Thanks
Gordie
P.S.
I just don't feel good about using ether. Are there real reasons why I should feel this way?
i am sure people are tired of hearing about the Arctic... but oh well.
Detroit's were very common in the oilfield, as was the use of starting fluid.
I will never understand the reluctance to use it.
it was never unusual to find two or three empty cans in trucks or in tool boxes on compressors etc...
There is very little ether in starting fluids today it's not going hurt anything just spin it and give it a whiff
Thanks Guys. I'm going to forgo the replacement.
You want a cheap block heater? Buy a 500 watt halogen work light (like $15). When it is cold and you're going to leave the next morning, just set it up under the oil pan the night before. It will warm the engine sufficiently to start easily the next day. Good Luck, TomC
Hey Gordy,
Not sure of thread size, etc, but I purchased one online to fit (also behind the fuel pump). If I remember correctly I was able to wiggle it into position without having to remove the pump. I use a bit of starting fluid on my '04 when it's really cold out. I usually crank it over for 10 seconds or so... wait a bit... crank for 10 seconds more... wait a bit... crank again... sometimes it will go, but when it's really cold she is very reluctant to start, and that is when I use just the absolute minimum of starting fluid to get 'er going. I am pleased to hear luvrbus telling us that, "there is very little ether in starting fluids today"... That makes me feel better about using it when I must.
Gordy, I sent you a PM little while back. I am very interested in your '04 rear windows if still available. Let me know?
Thanks!
