Hi all,
I'm posting for Marilyn until she can logon to the forum herself. Here are her questions, and please let me know if there are any follow-ups and I will pass them along to her until she can sign on.
QuoteI need to again find a mechanic in the Dallas area. Also need to know what batteries our Eagle 05 takes. It's been at least 4-5 years that Floyd replaced batteries. He got rebuilt ones from Continental Batteries, but they need to know what he used - I can't find an old receipt any where.
Thanks very much and kind regards, Phil
And as an update, I see that when Floyd was posting back in 2012/2013 they were looking for a mechanic that makes housecalls. That may also be a help at this time as well.
Thanks again! Phil
If it is the original battery location it takes 2-8D 's 1 each battery compartment 1 on each side
but.. two 4d's will suit 98% of most peoples needs...and will easily start the motor.
Thanks all for the help w/ the batteries!
- Any suggestions for the bus mechanic in Dallas?
Kind Regards, Phil (for Marilyn)
If you don't use the two batteries for nothing but starting, two size 31 batteries will start the bus just fine. The weigh half as much as the 8D. Good Luck, TomC
1 8-D will start the bus fine I prefer 2 but then we go to the cold country sometimes and 2 group 31 or 1 -8D doesn't cut it
Phil, when I had the 4107, I used Darby Diesel Repair in Hutchins, TX -- 15-20 miles south of downtown Dallas at the intersection of I-45 and I-20. I had been referred to him by a retired GM Truck and Coach field engineer who lives nearby. Former mechanic for the local transit system, he worked on both trucks and buses once he started his own business.
I had no complaints about his work or pricing, but he was hard to talk to on the phone -- one word answers. His stepmother, Diane, runs/ran the office.
I say runs or ran, because when I Googled them just now to get contact information, one site came up that they were permanently closed. If John Vickers (RoadrunnerTX) sees this, he may know more, since he runs up and down that stretch of I-45 periodically.
Arthur
Other than that, I don't know of anyone in the area.
Last I heard Marilyn was still looking for a reputable mechanic in the Dallas area. Any suggestions?
Thanks! Phil
I have a trip to Texas coming up where I'll be working on some vintage coaches. What work is she looking to have done? I'll be going through Dallas with my bus full of tools and depending on what needs to be done could fit in a few days for her. I've been traveling all over helping bus owners work on their vintage buses for the last few months. I charge a small travel fee to cover my fuel and a super low $35 hourly rate. I'm working on a MC6 12v71 in OK then heading to Houston TX to work on a 4106 later this month, then to FL for a 4104. I can be contacted at scott@busgreasemonkey.com references available

Hey, Scott, that's great! Thanks for letting us know and posting your website.
Feel free to call Marilyn at (972) 987-5144. She is a very nice woman and used to have Sonny do all of her work.
Just FYI, Scott is awesome. I've been on his greasemonkey site and he's helped a ton of bus people including myself, work through issues. (Not the mental or emotional kind :-) he knows what he's doing and if you don't believe me, look up his YouTube videos. If Marilyn can squeeze a bit of time from him, she'd likely get her eagle issues resolved. I would connect her with Scott Crosby Phil. Shame, I just left Dallas and didn't even realize this post was here. I could have helped her out a little.

Marylin, just needs help now selling her bus for those that don't know she lost her husband it is a nice Eagle and she is a nice lady and its for sale in the classifieds here "dreams cut short"it's a sad deal the bus has her life savings in it.She is dealing with some real wako's trying to buy her bus for nothing
Ok I won't contact her as it sounds like what ever issue she had has been resolved.
Contact her Scott you maybe able to help her,she was just looking for some cheap batteries I sent her number to a Interstate Battery guy that was supposed to help her and haven't heard back she is nice lady her husband was nice man I sent him a lot of parts just go easy on the charges if you can help her out.
Your rates are so reasonable I am thinking about hiring you to help me with a major suspension and brake job are you up for Arizona for a few weeks
I just talked to Marilyn. She just got two new Start batteries but she would like someone to drive it around and be sure it is running as it is supposed to. She wants want's someone to go thru it and just check it out and be sure it is in good running condition including the gauges. May be a clutch problem and potentially a steering problem. Please email her for more info runningeagle@att.net. Or call 469 486 1045.
If you go Scott, the bus has a 7 speed transmission with a clutch brake don't push the pedal to the floor or it screws up the shifting and it has power assist steering it is not going to turn without moving help her if you can. It's going to be awhile before we head to Texas as I have to take care of Hatt's Eagle before I can leave.Sonnie was going to take care of her but unfortunately he passed away
I'll give her a call tomorrow. I'm still working out my schedule. Knowing it has a clutch brake is some good info to have before driving it. That's the kind of thing a widow might not know to tell a driver of the bus. Clifford I could come and help you on a project like that. I think I'm in Texas again for a week like the last week in April and I could shoot out to the desert for a couple of weeks from there since I'm like 1/2 way there already. I'll need to check those dates but my February is full and my early April getting scheduled for east coast work in New York and New Jersey.
Clifford I checked and April 29 I finish up a job in Dallas tx and could come to you for a set period of time I'd need to know approx how many days to schedule. Let be know if that's something you are intrested in and give me a call and we can work it out. I just need a parking spot for the silversides and a 30a hookup.
I'm leaving for Texas tomorrow I'll be working on the cat bus 4106 in Houston most of the week but I'll head to Dallas area to help her out later in the week.
So many good folk here on this forum. Thanks all who have been able to contribute to the thread or contact Marilyn directly. I've been forwarding a number of the responses to Marilyn to keep her up to date.
You guys are the best!
Kind Regards, Phil
I just arrived at Marilyn's. Started the bus is sounds really good and don't smoke. First issue I found is this.
Air tank leak on eagle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvuZtJW_8sQ#)
Tank rusted a hold into it. Not going to be super easy to get out due to location and generator Install from a quick look
Power steering is airomatic so that's a bit of a different deal. But he knew what it felt like before and said it was much tighter than before so I'll trouble shoot it
Finding a tank it's the one under the battery box. Available? Or just get similar. It can be welded but one rust hole from the inside and it's not even in the bottom would concern me greatly for other compromised areas. I'd like to find new one.
That tank is really full of water.
An idea. What kind of pressure does the tank see? If welding in place cool. If removed, maybe clean and apply a few layers of fiberglass and resin on the whole tank, encase it if you will. May be overkill but eliminates worry about further compromise.
120 psi
Ping tank (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkan10HIHGw#)
I see why it rusted out :)
So you can get the tank out easily to weld it?

Smoking bus air tanks slap my grandma that's a lot of water! People, drain your tanks for crying out loud!

at least it's not oily ;D
That tank is not original to the bus the ping tank are cast aluminum mounted on the drivers side under the battery about 18" from the compressor.I wonder if the tank was added for the Air O Matic steering ?.
Or if someone moved the wet tank from the location on the rear axle housing to that spot, does it have have a small tank mounted on the back of the axle housing Scott. When it was on the axle Eagle used a Bendix DV-2 automatic drain to keep the water drained fwiw
I saw a dv2 mounted inside the passenger rear wheel well area but didn't see a tank it was hooked to due to some fiberglass plastic type cover under there but it wasn't for this tank.
:)
The leak is fixed. The clutch was a super stiff and annoyingly squeaky. So I lubed it like a porn star and it's super easy now.
I installed the pantograph wiper assemblies drivers works and passengers is intermittent so it needs a rebuild kit but I told her not to waste her money fixing it. Just put rainex on because she would never get that investment back. I couldn't get the wiper valves to leak she was worried about them leaking but they didn't for me and I turned them on and off 50 times and even jiggled them they never not leak but hers didn't
I checked the oil and it's good. I checked the coolant and the entire surge tank was empty. But a sight glass drain line showed it was only 1" Below the tank. I added a few gallons
Airomatic seemed to work fine. I heard the air discharging each way. And I could turn the wheel even stopped. My manual steering bus weighs less and it was 50% easier than what I do and the eagle weighs way more so it's working but it's not full blown power steering.
It's truly the best sounding engine I've heard in a long time. It sounds great.
I tried to only charge her for the antifreeze I put in for $25. But since I spent all day here she wouldn't do that she gave me some more money but and I appreciate it but it was not required. Her husband sounded like he was a great guy and I enjoyed hearing stories about him and his bus.
I'm sure I did s couple other things but I don't remember. Oh I added 10 gallons of diesel to it for her too.
You're a good man Charlie Brown. Sounds like her bus got some much needed loving. Where to next?

LOL ! Clifford I wasn't trying to piss in his Cheerios on his board but rather trying to make him aware of possible future "ramifications" (in bad places :o
if you get my drift) if anything ever happened after the buyer failed to replace the tank as recommended and was in an accident and it came up that Scott welded it.
Now that said I ain't saying I WOULD HAVE WELDED IT, and I AIN'T SAYING I would NOT have welded it if it was on my personal coach or vehicle.
What I am saying is if it were a commercial bus, truck or whatever OR it was not mine and I was charging to repair the vehicle there is NO WAY ANYONE would have ever KNOWN if I welded it or not! (too many lawyers and not enough "backwoods judges" these days!)
;D BK ;D
PS You know I ALWAYS respect and FOLLOW your advice 100%!
(well kinda sorta!) ::)
LOL I didn't even know you were involved BK,my understanding it was just a pin hole and if the tank was in bad shape he couldn't have welded it anyway. It's wet tank on a dual air system with spring brakes what could happen there would be no difference if it lost a compressor or main line.Scott just did what I ask him to do, I knew the owner he would have done they same.I seen those tanks where people have used metal building screws the ones with rubber gasket to plug pin holes some have been like that for 20 years I know of.I don't know anything about Scotts business I understand he wasn't charging her and it helped her out, now you do have to play by a different set of rules. No harm no foul on this end
