I have a low time 7.5 KW diesel generator installed in my MCI 103C3. On our last trip out it started shutting down on us while carrying a load. Now it will only run for a while, it changes RPM up and down before it finally shuts itself down. Any ideas?
Fuel line clogged?
Coolant low.....electric fan if used not coming on........thermostat not opening........defective overheat sensor........fuel filter plugged........fuel pump going bad.......fuel level low........oil level low........oil pressure low when hot.......low oil pressure sensor going bad.......partially plugged exhaust.......
If it was mine,I would use an ir gun at block and read temp when it shuts down, after checking coolant oil and fuel levels. Harbor Freight and others sell ir guns pretty cheap nowadays.
Changing rpm it will be fuel related do have enough fuel in the main tank ?
Hi viking1,
Our 10kw gen was doing that same hunting for the right rpm.
It turned out to be the gen set controller.
I replaced it and the gen is humming along just fine for the last 3 years.

A bad controller will make it hunt but I never saw one that would kill the engine
Thanks every one. I fired it up yesterday, put a load on it and it seemed to run like a champ. So now I'm more confused then ever, it's like it fixed itself sitting for a few weeks. Maybe it was a vapor lock?
The #1 issue with small diesel generators is related to fuel filters, then weak transfer pump, then bad fuel line. If it has an electronic governor, another possibility.
A good description with photo would be good.
