You can sharpen drill bits free hand on the bench grinder. Google it. You will find lots of instructions.

After watching the videos and seeing all the positive reviews on Amazon, I'm going to get one. Last time I ever considered one 20 years ago, they were over 4 hundred bucks.

I have one. Never use it. I went back to using the grinder. Faster and easier.

I've had my old 500 for a long while, and it works well on all except the smallest bits  -  with bits smaller than about 5/32" you have to be careful to not give them more than a few turns against the stone, otherwise they end up with a negative relief angle!   I also set my relief angle to the larger of the two choices, but then the downside is the bit's cutting edge can overheat more easily on hard steels.   If drilling stainless or tougher heat-treated steels I resharpen my bits after just one or two holes, so sometimes I use my Drill Doctor a lot through the day.

I keep a Sharpie marker pen and a magnifying glass with my Drill doctor so I can more easily see exactly how the bits look before and after sharpening  -  I use the Sharpie like poor man's bluing!

It's worth mastering using it.   Having all one's drill bits always 100% perfectly sharpened makes it easier when you have to drill awkward holes, and it prolongs the drill's life because it's not working as hard.   Don't give up on it!   Bench grinders won't give you accurate consistency  -  if the point is only a few thou off center, the bit can drill slightly off-center or oversize.

I started with the 500 and went to the 750 about 6 mos ago. Still have the 500 and it seems easier than the 750 though many steps are the same. Not sure why it seems easier with the 500. I have found that the sharpening is not consistent. Some bits are super sharp, others no better after the sharpening process. Found this on both the 500 and 750.
For me, it was easy to learn the steps but given the nonconsistent results, I think I may not have everything mastered. I will say, that I have also noticed, the cheaper the bit, ex. cheap HSS, the less likely I get good results. May be the problem, don't know.

I use American made bits from the industrial supply here that is why I want to sharpen the bits $5.10 for a 5/16th bit is not cheap

Don't rush out to buy one Chessie if I don't get it to work it will be a buy Amazon cannot touch even with Prime ???

Yes I have a 750 model and it takes a "minute" to get used to it, then you sharpen every bit you can find laying around and they all work like new again. Could you describe the part of the video you don't understand. My guess would be orienting the bit to the chuck for depth/angle and start of grind point. Will help you if I can. I love mine and I used a grinding wheel for most of my life. Gerry H

Our Metal and Auto shops in high school had special rests for the grinders that had the exact proper angle for sharpening drill bits.  We also had very good close instruction.  A very long time ago.
