Title: Ceiling
Post by: mikke60 on August 25, 2015, 06:30:52 AM
Getting ready to do ceiling in my 5a
Looking for pros and cons of hard surface such as cherry veneer vs softer material such as padded vinyl. Doing walls in grass wallpaper.
Thanks, mike

Hi Mike, I  was going to put aluminum sheets across  from beam to beam, B&B in LV did that on an airstream, with bent wood to cover the seams, easy to install, easily  cleanable reflects light, shinny or matt side, just a thought, lvmci...

mine is vinyl/Naugahyde in the bath/shower area, and a nice burlap in the living areas, both padded.

I am using stamped tin ceiling tile circa turn of the century(1900 for the youngsters!)  I sprayed a clearcoat over them and fastened them with button head stainless steel screws to the 3/8 plywood.  No trim yet, but will be using wood to transition to the curved sides on my 4905.  Basically covering the middle 4 ft.

I too used the 24x24 square stamped tin.  I like the look and it was easy to do.  You will need a 36 inch paper cutter to do the job right.  I got my tiles from American Tin.

Scott, where did you get those panels?

I just sheered a pile of stainless that I will be installing for our ceiling. I also lined the ceiling with reflex then glued in 1" high density foam and another layer of reflex. I then used foam in the can to seal any places where the foam had a gap. I was trying to insure that no heat or cold got around the insulation. The roof was done with Bus Kote to help with the insulation process.

In the beginning Aluminum did come to mind, but over time aluminum will need some sort of polishing to keep the shine, you really have to clean aluminum well (meaning get all the oils off both surfaces). To really get all oils off you will need to strip the aluminum with an acid etch chemical which will leave the aluminum spotted, streaked...etc. I would imagine you would need to polish it after that.
Aluminum is much more reasonable in price VS stainless.

Good luck on your project!

Mike

Hard surfaces reflect sound
soft surfaces absorb sound

How loud is it now ?

Our Airstream had hard interior surfaces on the walls & ceiling, but had lots of curtains. We didn't ride in it, so no way of knowing how bad the road noise was.
Our Newell has textured wall paper over plywood and a padded vinyl ceiling. Road noise is not a problem.  ;D

I am going use smooth padded ultra leather made in 2 ft wide pop in panels with black Plexiglass mirrors treated with a chemical to stop scratches we will see how that works  ;D trimmed in wood.

I have to much stuff in the ceiling not to use pop in panels wish I could use a solid covering

I also am working on the ceiling. Pictures would be cool. I was thinking about some kind of wood or maybe naugahyde with a foam backing.

Mine is similar.  Its a nice finish if you have a rounded ceiling.  I get compliments on mine all the time (thanks Tommy!)

We have had both soft surface ceiling in the 4107 and hard surface ceiling in the Eagle.  The soft surface does kill that tin bucket sound and gives you just a little more R factor. It gets dusty though. The laminate ceiling in the Eagle doubles as the lighting source. Up lights in the tops of the valances bounce off the ceiling for really good lights. There isn't that much difference in the sound in the Eagle, but our floors are carpet, the bottom half of the walls are upholstered, the shades are day/night, and the furniture is leather. If the walls and floor are going to be hard surface, then maybe the soft ceiling would be better.

This is what I am looking at to convert a little sound to heat and add a little R, the only question would be cleaning but they do use it in high end boats > http://www.aapusa.com/hushcloth_perf_vinyl_faced.html (http://www.aapusa.com/hushcloth_perf_vinyl_faced.html) About 2$sf retail

There is a place in Vegas that sells the material and clips that Gary uses for those panels, the guy at Santa Barbara Upholstery Supply on Charleston in Vegas has anything you need for ceiling.
With a warehouse full of material and attaching hardware to choose from at better than internet prices,we frequent that place a lot ever since Gary sent us there. He takes credit cards but cash speaks  www.santabarbaraupholsterysupply.com

Hey thanks for the plug Sean. That is a headliner I installed in a raised roof Model 10 At B&B the beginning of the week. I have learned some tricks there and will have something special planned for our ceiling, just not sure what though heehee! Maybe a DMX controlled lighting system, sorta like the Fremont Experience here in Fabulous Las Vegas  ;)
